Synchronized Wave Therapy

By Dawn Larsen, Contributing Editor

Physiotherapy is a term well recognized by Physical Therapists as it is their core therapy to re-condition the body after injury through the introduction of water (hydrotherapy) movement (massage) and current (electrical stimulation) to assist in healing. It is only recently, through the creation of the Physioceutical concept that Physiotherapy transitions from a body care therapy to facial aesthetics.
This cross over provides physicians and aestheticians alike new strategies in treating skin conditions related to aging while incorporating...

Peptides: REBUILDING THE DERMAL MATRIX WITH THIS NEW IN-DEMAND INGREDIENT IN SKIN CARE PRODUCTS

By Sam Dhatt, CEO, DermaQuest™ Skin Therapy

Peptides are the new in-demand ingredient in skin care products. Chemists are excited about them because they have scientific data that proves they rebuild the dermal matrix. Skin care professionals are excited because they are something new to offer their clients, and their patients are excited because they work. But are they really “new,” as in a new discovery? No, peptides have been around since the birth of tissue – way back when.
Scientists have long recognized them as the building blocks of life. They are made up of a string of amino acids held together by tough bonds of nitrogen and carbon. They look like a necklace and are present in all our tissues. One to 100 amino acids are called peptides, 100-200 they are...

Analytical Report: Aesthetica, Platinum & Perfecta CANDELA CORPORATION’S NEW GENERATION PULSE DYE LASERS

By David Cauger, Contributing Editor

Candela Corporation (NASDAQ: CLZR) has made significant technical improvements to their Vbeam pulsed dye laser. These improvements are incorporated into three new products: Aesthetica, Platinum, and Perfecta. I visited Candela Headquarters on January 5, 2006, to examine the products and determine how the technical changes to these pulsed dye lasers may expand and enhance clinical applications as well as improve usability.
The pulsed dye laser (PDL) has been in use for over 20 years. Its traditional uses include port wine stains, superficial hemangiomas, and a variety of acquired vascular lesions and facial and leg veins, including cherry angiomas, telangectasias, pyogenic granulomas, and poikiloderma of Civatte. Although PDLs have a very high attraction to the melanin, in the past technical limitations made treating pigmented lesions problematic. That is,...

Hiring a Consultant

By Padraic B. Deighan, M.B.A., J.D.

The medical field and spa world are increasingly complex. The medical, legal, and business issues can be overwhelming. Medi-Spas, for example, have grown from a cottage industry to a booming industry. Along with this growth comes increased competition, greater scrutiny, and more regulation. This growth has spawned another industry: consulting. Many physicians and medical spa owners have turned to consultants to grow their business or to ensure legal compliance...

By Austine Mah, Contributing Editor

There’s more for men! The men’s skin care market is experiencing great growth with the formation of product lines specifically targeting men and their grooming practices. According to Euromonitor International, this U.S. $18 billion sector of the industry grew by 5.5% in 2004 alone. Like women, men are becoming increasingly more aware of creating a successful and healthy lifestyle, concerned with longevity and aesthetic appearance. Now more than ever, there is more for men, especially in the ethnic skin care industry...

Postpartum Rejuvenation

By Kirk A. Churukian, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Motherhood is a blessing, but it can also wreak havoc on a body. Pregnancy is nothing short of a traumatic process which can permanently alter the structure, shape, and often times function of the female body. Additionally, the psychological effects of seeing a body ravaged by the process of childbirth can leave a woman feeling unattractive and selfconscious, particularly during sexual relations.
Because these changes are structural, no amount of exercise or diet will alter these physical deformations; only a surgical intervention can reshape and reform the postpartum body.
