Topical Nutrition

By Dawn Larsen, Contributing Editor

Beauty formulations evolve to a new level of therapeutic value as ingredient research and synergistic concepts merge to create powerpacked products which integrate into any client’s lifestyle. This transformation is the result of the Medi-Spa philosophy and has carried over into product formulation through the creation of a “Physioceutical.” A true Physioceutical focuses on the health factors of the skin which secondarily provides a youthful, flawless complexion. When I am educating on the principles of a Physioceutical, I often explain to my attendees that it is only when the skin is healthy that the true beauty potential will be realized. The days of offering ingredients which provided a “quick fix” for temporary effects are long gone....

Chemical Peels

By Margaret Ancira, Founder and CEO, PCA Advanced Skin Care Systems

Quick. Effective. Affordable. It’s what patients are looking for when seeking cosmetic treatments in the current market. With the media constantly showcasing new treatments and “quick fixes,” the impressionable public is developing expectations which are becoming increasingly unrealistic. They want swift treatments which produce immediate, noticeable changes. One of the newest trends to feed into this frenzy is at-home chemical peel kits. Patients are eager to erase facial flaws and know that chemical peels deliver. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, chemical peels are second only to Botox® injections as the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed in clinical practices....

Analytical Report: HOYA ConBio MedLite™ C6

By David Cauger, Contributing Editor

HOYA ConBio (Fremont, CA) has developed a tattoo removal laser which has four wavelengths in one laser, the only laser of its kind currently sold. The purpose of these wavelengths is to treat the numerous colors of which contemporary tattoos are often comprised. In addition, other applications for the C6 have been documented, and these will be discussed in brief later in the article.

Proposed Legislation in Florida & California

There are many of us in the medical, spa, and medical spa industry who have comments about proposed legislation in Florida and California which might limit who may own a “medical spa,” who may perform services in a medical spa, and who may supervise such personnel. I have noted quite a bit of misinformation on the subject so the intention of this article is to clarify the issues and offer some guidance.

Skin Tightening

By Mai Pham
Trends Editor

A few years ago, the promise of nonsurgical skin tightening, often referred to as “non-surgical facelift,” was almost too good to be true. Thermage®, the leading innovator in this market space, was reportedly uncomfortable for the patient, expensive, and inconsistent in its ability to produce predictable, repeatable results. Things have changed in the last few years. Thermage has introduced new protocols and a larger treatment tip, reducing patient discomfort levels while increasing effectiveness and patient satisfaction....

Market Your Practice

By Catherine Maley, MBA, Contributing Editor

Today’s consumer is inundated with advertising messages like never before. Open your local newspaper, listen to your local radio stations, watch your local TV news stations, and I’ll bet you see your colleagues promoting themselves as the best, the cheapest, or the most up-to-date providers of aesthetic treatments. Surf the Internet as well. “Google” a procedure and see thousands of choices pop up....

Faster Healing

By Richard Ellenbogen, M.D., F.A.C.S.

For the past number of years, Drs. Gary Motykie, John Dias and I have taught a course at the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) entitled “Faster Healing Variations of Standard Operations.” The course teaches a number of philosophical ideals in dealing with plastic surgery patients. In particular, the course focuses on explaining variations of operations which provide a very high satisfaction rate.
