Manuel M. Pena, M.D., arrived in Naples, FL, to begin his practice on Dec. 28, 1989, after his plastic surgery residency. Two days later, a young boy was hurt in a hit-and-run accident while Pena was on call for the hospital. The nurses were so impressed with his work that his practice took off and hasnt slowed down yet, says Regina Pena, R.N. In 1991, he added an aesthetician to the practice for pre and post protocols. In 1997, he added space to his practice and another aesthetician. The clients loved the care, so we added laser hair removal and some routine aesthetic and spa care, he said.

As baby boomers age, the men are seeing wrinkles and sags when they look in the mirror and are wanting to do something about them. Men now make up 24 percent of customers at traditional spas nationwide, spas that are the domain of women. The percentage has remained stable at 20-25%, however, with many spas assuming that the mens market is not going to be of much significance to them or because they have had little response to attempts to enhance the percentage. Possibly, men wishing for esthetic fixes are just foregoing sitting among the women and are finding a place just for them in new men only spas.
