ATnT Special Report
August 2010
Spa Market 2010

By Jacqueline Clark, Contributing Editor & Advisor
ATnT Research Department

The U.S. spa market continues to suffer from the economic downturn that became evident in 2008. Since then very many spas have closed — experts’ estimates of the numbers of closures vary, and some insist it could have been up to one third of the sector. The spas interviewed in early 2010 report that their revenues fell by, on average, 15% in 2009, compared to 2008.

However, any assessment of spa closures needs to bear in mind the “churn” that is such a feature of the spa and beauty services markets. “Churn” refers both to the openings and closures of businesses and to therapists changing employment, entering, and leaving the industry each year. Some industry organizations estimate the annual “attrition rate” among massage therapists at 18%, that is, the
percent who leave the industry each year.

The Downturn: One of Many Blows
Some see the economic downturn as a double blow, if not a treble blow, for spas. The U.S. spa industry by 2008 was suffering from an
oversupply of spa businesses and of spa therapists. In the large and fragmented industry all types of spa businesses have been
hurt, that is day spas, hotel spas, and med spas. Many spas that opened just before the downturn are burdened by debt.

In the large and fragmented industry all types of spa businesses have been hurt, that is day spas, hotel spas, and med spas. Another blow for spas in states such as Florida that had hoped for an upturn from winter business was severe and prolonged bad weather in the winter of 2009/10… READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

Dr. Frank Ryan, 50, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon known for his Heidi Montag makeover and work on stars like Gene Simmons, Vince Neil, Adrianne Curry and Shauna Sand, was killed in a car accident yesterday afternoon.

TMZ reports that Ryan’s jeep went off the side of the Pacific Coast Highway, smashing onto some rocks. “Lifeguards initially tried to help Ryan, to no avail,” TMZ writes. Ryan was trapped in the vehicle with major head injuries; he died at the scene.

Before the accident, Ryan had been hiking near Malibu with his Border Collie, Jill, and shared a photo on Twitter.

Ryan was the surgeon who famously performed 10 surgeries on Heidi Montag in one day last November. He was also the man who told her she was “cut off” and couldn’t possibly sustain any more cosmetic work.

LA-based model Caitlin O’Connor mourned the loss of Ryan on Twitter Tuesday morning: “Oh my! Friend and plastic surgeon Dr Frank Ryan died yesterday in a terrible car crash. I was supposed to see him Thursday morning.”

Chew on This: Six Dental Myths Debunked

BOSTON — Brushing, flossing, and twice-yearly dental check-ups are standard for oral health care, but there are more health benefits to taking care of your pearly whites than most of us know. In a review article, a faculty member at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) debunks common dental myths and outlines how diet and nutrition affects oral health in children, teenagers, expectant mothers, adults and elders.

Myth 1: The consequences of poor oral health are restricted to the mouth.
Expectant mothers may not know that what they eat affects the tooth development of the fetus. Poor nutrition during pregnancy may make the unborn child more likely to have tooth decay later in life. “Between the ages of 14 weeks to four months, deficiencies in calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, protein and calories could result in oral defects,” says Carole Palmer, EdD, RD, professor at TUSDM and head of the division of nutrition and oral health promotion in the department of public health and community service. Some data also suggest that lack of adequate vitamin B6 or B12 could be a risk factor for cleft lip and cleft palate formation.

In children, tooth decay is the most prevalent disease, about five times more common than childhood asthma. “If a child’s mouth hurts due to tooth decay, he/she is less likely to be able to concentrate at school and is more likely to be eating foods that are easier to chew but that are less nutritious. Foods such as donuts and pastries are often lower in nutritional quality and higher in sugar content than more nutritious foods that require chewing, like fruits and vegetables,” says Palmer. “Oral complications combined with poor diet can also contribute to cognitive and growth problems and can contribute to obesity.”

Myth 2: More sugar means more tooth decay.
It isn’t the amount of sugar you eat; it is the amount of time that the sugar has contact with the teeth. “Foods such as slowly-dissolving candies and soda are in the mouth for longer periods of time. This increases the amount of time teeth are exposed to the acids formed by oral bacteria from the sugars,” says Palmer.

Some research shows that teens obtain about 40 percent of their carbohydrate intake from soft drinks. This constant beverage use increases the risk of tooth decay. Sugar-free carbonated drinks and acidic beverages, such as lemonade, are often considered safer for teeth than sugared beverages but can also contribute to demineralization of tooth enamel if consumed regularly.

Myth 3: Losing baby teeth to tooth decay is okay.
It is a common myth that losing baby teeth due to tooth decay is insignificant because baby teeth fall out anyway. Palmer notes that tooth decay in baby teeth can result in damage to the developing crowns of the permanent teeth developing below them. If baby teeth are lost prematurely, the permanent teeth may erupt malpositioned and require orthodontics later on.

Myth 4: Osteoporosis only affects the spine and hips.
Osteoporosis may also lead to tooth loss. Teeth are held in the jaw by the face bone, which can also be affected by osteoporosis. “So, the jaw can also suffer the consequences of a diet lacking essential nutrients such as calcium and vitamins D and K,” says Palmer.

“The jawbone, gums, lips, and soft and hard palates are constantly replenishing themselves throughout life. A good diet is required to keep the mouth and supporting structures in optimal shape.”

Myth 5: Dentures improve a person’s diet.
If dentures don’t fit well, older adults are apt to eat foods that are easy to chew and low in nutritional quality, such as cakes or pastries. “First, denture wearers should make sure that dentures are fitted properly. In the meantime, if they are having difficulty chewing or have mouth discomfort, they can still eat nutritious foods by having cooked vegetables instead of raw, canned fruits instead of raw, and ground beef instead of steak. Also, they should drink plenty of fluids or chew sugar-free gum to prevent dry mouth,” says Palmer.

Myth 6: Dental decay is only a young person’s problem.
In adults and elders, receding gums can result in root decay (decay along the roots of teeth). Commonly used drugs such as antidepressants, diuretics, antihistamines and sedatives increase the risk of tooth decay by reducing saliva production. “Lack of saliva means that the mouth is cleansed more slowly. This increases the risk of oral problems,” says Palmer. “In this case, drinking water frequently can help cleanse the mouth.”

Adults and elders are more likely to have chronic health conditions, like diabetes, which are risk factors for periodontal disease (which begins with an inflammation of the gums and can lead to tooth loss). “Type 2 diabetes patients have twice the risk of developing periodontal disease of people without diabetes. Furthermore, periodontal disease exacerbates diabetes mellitus, so meticulous oral hygiene can help improve diabetes control,” says Palmer.

This article appears in the July/August issue of Nutrition Today.

Evolution and Analysis of the Toothbrush

By Kyle W. Sembera

The following article on the evolution and analysis of the toothbrush was written by Kyle Sembera, a mechanical engineering senior at Lamar University, Beaumont, Tex., as a final assignment for an elective design class. Sembera’s toothy research project was inspired by course professor P.R. Corder who, during a recent visit to the dentist, found himself musing on the merits of modern toothbrush design.

Have you ever tried brushing your teeth with a smashed stick? While today there are many sophisticated options for the orally conscious, during the dawn of civilization, the smashed stick—the earliest predecessor of the modern toothbrush—had a corner on the market. By chewing the end of a soft twig flat, people created a rudimentary brush, which aided in the removal of food particles. Before this method was developed, people may have used a stick similar to a toothpick to perform the task.

Demonstrating the benefits of modern toothbrush technology ME senior Kyle Sembera flashes his pearly whites.

Because of the ubiquitous place toothbrushes hold in modern society, the need no longer exists to brush with a smashed stick, yet some native tribes still use simple sticks to clean their teeth.

This article looks at the origin and evolution of modern toothbrushing and, for those who have ever worried about catastrophic toothbrush failure, assuages fears with a finite-element analysis, comparing a traditionally styled toothbrush to a modern one.

Origin of the Toothbrush

The Toothstick
Physical evidence from well-preserved Egyptian tombs dating back over 5,000 years suggests that the Egyptians used toothsticks for dental hygiene. Even before this civilization, the Mesopotamians wrote of the siwak, another version of the basic toothstick. These original toothpicks were most often made from porcupine quills, bird feathers, or wooden thorns.

During eighteenth-and nineteenth-century Europe, ornate metal toothpicks were developed. Serving as both art and status symbol, these were often copper, silver, or even gold.

Currently, some 10 million people in the Middle East and other parts of the world use toothpicks daily as their primary tooth-cleaning mechanism. In fact, toothpicks were used as the primary method for cleaning teeth as late as the early 1950s in some isolated sections of the United States.

The First Toothbrush
In the seventeenth century, Europeans often used rags or sponges dipped in sulfur oil or a salt solution to rub their teeth clean. Sometimes these rags were attached to a stick to help reach the back teeth, but the teeth were essentially being mopped, rather than brushed. From this practice evolved the first toothbrush, invented in 1780 by William Addis of Clerkenwall, England.

Addis attached hairs from the tail of a cow to the end of a whittled thighbone from the same animal, which was reportedly the only bone strong enough to survive the bristle-attachment procedure and still maintain its strength when wet. Eventually, boar hairs replaced the hairs from the cow’s tail. To this day, descendants of William Addis still manufacture toothbrushes at a factory in England.

Celluloid Handle
During World War I, the bones that were being used for toothbrushes were usurped by the soup industry due to the nutritional demands of war. The resultant shortage called for the development of a new toothbrush-handle material. Celluloid handles, constructed by injecting plastic into molds and cooling them in a given shape, met this demand. Then, in the 1920s, a new method of attaching bristles to the handle was developed: drilling holes into the brush head, forcing in bunches of bristles, and securing them with a staple. This method is still used by some manufacturers today.

Nylon Bristles
Prior to World War II, Chinese boar hairs were the favored material for bristles, but during the war a roadblock out of Chung-King impeded the export of these popular hairs. Nylon filament, having been developed in 1938, was an ideal replacement.

The nylon filament came with several advantages, including a dramatic reduction in production costs and the ability to control bristle texture. Manufacturers could also shape the filament tip and vary its diameter for improved performance. Boar hair, on the other hand, often fell out, did not dry well, and was prone to bacterial growth. Although nylon continues to dominate the market today, boar-hair bristles still account for about 10 percent of toothbrushes sold worldwide.

Today’s Toothbrush
A study of worldwide patent applications between the years 1963-1998 reveals about 3,000 toothbrush patents. The brands, styles and colors of toothbrushes are virtually endless.

One manufacturer markets both a toothbrush with two heads which surround the teeth, claiming it will clean teeth more effectively, and a toothbrush with a built-in tongue scraper, designed to remove bacteria, which builds up on the tongue.

Another manufacturer stresses the importance of maintaining a cleaner toothbrush. Their design incorporates a unique hole in the center of the bristle head, ensuring that all food and other debris is easily rinsed off the brush. Still other manufacturers stress that bristle orientation is key to maintaining clean teeth. They sell toothbrushes with angled bristles, which tackle the teeth at different angles to maximize cleaning effectiveness.

One thing most manufacturers can agree on is the importance of having a handle that assists the user in reaching the back teeth, the most neglected and difficult to reach. One popular remedy has been to angle the toothbrush handle.

RADIUS unique designs and customized grips offer smarter, easier way to take care of teeth

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – RADIUS has become the toothbrush maker of today. With customized grips, ergonomic handles, oval heads, and three times the amount of bristles than ordinary toothbrushes, the revolutionary RADIUS toothbrush designs have made brushing teeth fun, comfortable, easier and more beneficial. With their wide surface area heads, RADIUS toothbrushes offer users a long lasting, sustainable toothbrush for less pressure on the gums and a smarter, more efficient clean. As the very first toothbrush to accommodate both right- and left-handed people, RADIUS toothbrushes have become the must-have for all those looking to improve their dental health this year and this new decade. By encouraging consumers to Get a better handle on it!, RADIUS hopes that everyone will focus more attention on their dental health in 2010 and years to come.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing teeth twice daily for two minutes and that worn bristles won’t do a good job of cleaning teeth, but many people’s dental habits do not meet ADA standards. Experts report that poor dental habits such as not using the right toothbrush, improper techniques, not brushing long enough, not flossing and too much sugar in one’s diet lead to a variety of oral problems linked to heart disease, diabetes, premature birth, arthritis, osteoporosis, and more. For the most common perpetrators of these mistakes, there is now a toothbrush to make things easier with RADIUS.

Also, the ADA recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months or when bristles are frayed. Wholeheartedly, the experts at RADIUS agree, especially if one is using one of those toothbrush brands that have ordinary bristles as they are likely to become frayed or worn in that amount of time or less. RADIUS toothbrushes have up to 300 percent more bristles and a much more effective, wide oval head that’s designed to fit very comfortably in any mouth. In addition, with so many more top grade bristles, on average, RADIUS toothbrushes last three times as long as any other brands.

With their comfortable, more effective heads and soft, fine bristles, RADIUS Toothbrushes allow users to reach a larger surface with less pressure on the gums. The ADA recommends brushing at an angle, which most people are not aware of, but the comfortable, ergonomically-designed RADIUS handles are made to brush at just the right angle. The average brush time, which is 45 seconds for males and 60 seconds for females, is far under the two minute ADA brushing recommendation. RADIUS makes brushing teeth easier and fun and has been found to increase brushing time for most users. RADIUS users report that RADIUS Toothbrushes last three times longer than the average toothbrush, helping consumers to also get a better handle on their finances, saving them money from having to buy new toothbrushes every three months.

“Launched 25 years ago, RADIUS continues to design and manufacture some of the world’s most advanced and innovative toothbrushes, and we are so thrilled to see dental health becoming more of a priority for people today,” says Saskia Foley, Executive Vice President of RADIUS. “Good oral health begins with clean teeth, and RADIUS is helping everyone get a better handle on their teeth. We’ve already gotten a huge amount of positive feedback on the expansion of our product line, and that shows us that now is the time that people can do something about their oral health in a fun and innovative, yet effective, way.”

Since the company’s inception, RADIUS has designed seven distinct and unique lines of toothbrushes for different styles and needs. With the expansion of the product line, including the introduction of the Scuba, Intelligent™, Source, and children’s line (Kidz, Pure Baby and Totz), RADIUS has been deemed the “natural choice for a natural smile.” With every single line featuring a customized grip, a round head and soft premium bristles, RADIUS also offers both left-handed and right-handed toothbrushes, making it easier for left-handed users who usually have a difficult time with ordinary toothbrushes. Features of each product line include:

RADIUS Original
The first and most popular, the RADIUS Original features an oval head with 300% more premium bristles than any ordinary toothbrush. ADA accepted, the Original is made from 100% Sustainable Wood-based cellulose and distributes pressure evenly, reducing enamel erosion and massaging sensitive gum tissue to reduce bleeding, while the handle has a customized grip, ensuring a dentist recommended 45 degree angle.

RADIUS Source
With its unique environmentally-friendly design and a handle made from bio-plastics of recycled dollar bills, recycled flax fiber or recycled wood, the RADIUS Source allows users to keep their toothbrush forever. By using RADIUS lightweight, unbreakable replacement heads made from surgical-grade nylon, users can discard the heads and keep the handle forever. The replaceable heads snap easily into the handle, last three months and rotate for left or right-handed users. With its fanned bristle pattern and a narrow head for better access to the back teeth, the RADIUS Source is the answer for users who want to take care of their teeth and the earth.

RADIUS Scuba
Ideal for harder brushers, the RADIUS Scuba’s flexible rubber neck and non-slip handle reduces pressure while the wide oval head and 300% more bristles than ordinary toothbrushes leaves the mouth clean and healthy. Available in a variety of fun colors, the Scuba is perfect for those who wear braces. Also ADA accepted and available for both right- or left-handed users, the RADIUS Scuba is a fun and comfortable way for both right and left-handed users to brush their teeth.

RADIUS Intelligent
With a built in 2-minute timer and 30-second quadrant timer to help recommended brush time and technique, the RADIUS Intelligent guides users to brush for the appropriate time as recommended by the ADA. Included is a 3-month wear meter to signal time for a new replaceable head. The non-slip re-usable handle reduces waste by 93% and is guaranteed for 4 years.

RADIUS Kidz, Totz and Pure Baby
A mini-sized Original, the RADIUS Kidz, with even softer bristles for children’s sensitive teeth, a wide head, thumb grip and comfortable handle, makes brushing teeth fun and easy for all kids. Children are no longer fighting their parents on brushing teeth; they are asking for it with the RADIUS Kidz toothbrush.

For younger children, RADIUS offers the RADIUS Totz toothbrush, for children ages 18 months and up. With its tapered handle for parents and young tots, the FDA approved and Bisphenol-A Free brush is safe for young children’s teeth and sensitive gums. Its oval head is designed without corners for delicate gums and teeth. Finally, for the very young, the RADIUS Pure Baby toothbrush, for ages 6-18 months old, is a perfect way for parents to care for their baby’s sensitive mouth. With a tapered handle to provide maximum control and guidance, the oval head is designed without corners for babies’ soft mouths and is the world’s first completely dye-free, BPA-free toothbrush.

To get a better handle on your dental health in 2010, RADIUS encourages users to switch from their old toothbrush to a RADIUS Toothbrush. By using a RADIUS Toothbrush, consumers can get a better handle on their teeth, their smile, their health and their finances.

Arizona Regulation Update
Arizona requires all training providers be registered with the state to provide training to comply with their requirements. The program shall provide a provisional certificate to the applicant verifying the successful completion of the didactic training.

An aesthetician who has been using laser and IPL devices before the effective date of this amendment to this section may continue to do so if the aesthetician applies for and receives a certificate pursuant to this section before October 1, 2010. Arizona state legislature requires a laser technician who wishes to perform cosmetic laser procedures and procedures using IPL devices to successfully complete 40 hours of didactic training as required by agency rules at a certified training program.
More Information From State Website

Texas Regulations Update
The Texas Legislature has passed legislation in House Bill 449 that establishes a regulatory program for laser hair removal. The Department of State Health Services is charged with implementing that program. The legislation requires every laser hair removal facility to be licensed by the department. It also requires that each individual who performs laser hair removal procedures, except physicians, be certified by the department. By September 1, 2010, every laser hair removal facility must be licensed and each individual who performs laser hair removal must be certified.

However, the adoption of the laser hair removal rules and implementation of the laser hair removal program has been delayed for a number of reasons, including the request from state leadership for each state agency to submit a plan to reduce budgets by 5%, as well as implementing an agency hiring freeze to help address the state’s budget situation. Work on implementation, however, does continue forward. More Information From State Website

By Julian Pecquet

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) on Wednesday called on Congress to create extra incentives for medical device makers to tackle rare diseases.

“I’m concerned that we still don’t have equivalent incentives for devices as we have for drugs,” Franken said in opening remarks at a Senate health committee hearing on ways to promote new treatments and cures for rare and neglected pediatric diseases. “I think we can do more and I look forward to exploring this issue with the panel.”

Minnesota is home to several medical device giants, such as Medtronic.

Such companies say they need government help to make their investments in rare diseases worthwhile, because the affected populations are too tiny for them to turn a profit.

The industry group Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) weighed in with its own set of proposals as the hearing got under way.

“We must create a regulatory environment where innovation to address these unmet needs can thrive,” President and CEO Stephen Ubl said in a statement.

Ubl suggested the Food and Drug Administration start by developing general guidance for its humanitarian device exemption (HDE) program outlining appropriate types and levels of data necessary for approval.

The HDE program exempts devices that treat or diagnose diseases and conditions affecting fewer than 4,000 people in the United States from having to scientifically prove that they are effective for their intended purpose.

“Medical technology companies also face potentially enormous (research and development) costs in developing new pediatric devices with little hope of recouping their investment due to the small market for some products,” Ubl said. “To help mitigate these costs, AdvaMed proposes Congress create a strong pediatric device R&D tax credit program as well as a tax credit for pediatric HDEs similar to the tax credit that currently exists for orphan drugs.”

Global study shows growth in nanotechnology-based personal care products and brands

Eagan, MN - Small particles are becoming a big business for the world’s personal care products manufacturers according to an analysis of world patent activity published today by the IP Solutions business of Thomson Reuters. The new report, Can Nanotech Unlock the Fountain of Youth?, finds that the beauty industry has begun to make an aggressive foray into nanotechnology, using tiny molecular compounds to improve the performance of creams, sunscreens, shampoos and other personal-care products.

The report tracks unique inventions published in patent applications and granted patents from 2003 to 2009, along with trademark data from 2000 through 2009, to identify the companies and areas of nanotechnology innovation showing the sharpest growth in this industry. The findings include:

    * Nanotech Growth Accelerates: The volume of innovative patents involving nanotechnology in beauty and personal-care items grew by 103% over the last seven years, more than doubling from 181 patents in 2003 to 367 in 2009.

    * Specialty Chemical Companies Stake Claim: While L’Oreal and Amorepacific were early innovators in the development of nanotech-based beauty products, a great deal of new innovation in the field comes from companies that one would not traditionally associate with the cosmetics industry, including Fujifilm and BASF. Of 367 unique inventions filed in 2009, 10 were by Fujifilm; 9 were by BASF and 7 were by Amorepacific.

    * “Nano” Trademarks: From 2000 through the end of 2009, a total of 217 personal-care brands that incorporate the term “nano” were trademarked in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, European Community and WIPO; the second half of that period (2005 – 2009) had 575% more registered marks than the first half (2000 – 2004).

The data in this report was compiled using the Thomson Reuters Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPISM) database, for patent research, and SERION®, for trademarks, to identify global innovation and brand activity in nanotechnology for personal care products. Patent and trademark activity are being used as a benchmark for innovation. The patent research aggregates granted documents and published applications (examined and unexamined) in 2003 and 2009. Results from both time periods were then compared to determine the overall growth trend over the last seven years.

HYPOGONADISM - PART II
By M. Byers, B.S., S. Laddy, R.Ph., T. Mastanduono, R.Ph.

As noted in Part I of this series, endocrine suppression, or hypogonadism, is well documented to arise from: opiate therapy for chronic pain, aging, diabetes, and obesity. In recent years, increased focus on anti-aging and treatment of the whole patient has resulted in better patient outcomes and improved quality of life for hypogonadal patients. This is Part II of a two-part series on treatment options for hypogonadal patients. Part I focused on the identification and benefits of treating hypogonadism. Part II will focus on the side effects and issues associated with several Testosterone Replacement Therapies (TRT).

When identified, hypogonadism is typically treated with one of several hormone replacement therapies. In males, hypogonadism is treated with Testosterone Replacement Therapy, or TRT. Compliance, diversion, and side effects are common complaints with oral, transdermal, and transmucosal routes of administration. Additionally, TRT via gels and foam preparations can be associated with virilization.

TRT via implantable pellet therapy provides a significant improvement in hormone replacement therapy for men. This type of technology avoids compliance and diversion issues associated with prescribed formulations. Additionally, increased compliance results in steady state Testosterone (T) levels and significant improvement in quality of life for chronic pain patients suffering from hypogonadism. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

A NUTRITIONAL PERSPECTIVE

By Paula Simpson, B.A.Sc. (Nutrition), R.N.C.P.

Diet has an important role to play in many skin disorders; and when it comes to nutritional advice, Dermatologists are frequently faced with the challenge of separating fact from myth. Acne is by far the most common skin disease and is increasingly affecting both adolescents and adults in North America. Eighty percent of the population will experience some manifestation of acne. Twenty-five percent of them will have acne serious enough to merit some form of professional treatment. In contrast, acne remains rare in certain non-Westernized societies. Although not life threatening, the psycho-social consequences of those suffering with acne may be debilitating, thus patients are highly motivated to best manage and treat their condition.

For many years, the Acne-Diet Connection has been a hot topic of debate by leading skin health experts and researchers worldwide. In the 1930s, acne was considered to be a disease of disturbed carbohydrate metabolism in acne patients. In the 1950s, major dermatology text books contained specific lists of what foods to avoid for those suffering with acne.

Patients were told to avoid chocolate, fats, sweets, and carbonated sodas as part of their acne treatment programs. This treatment protocol was removed in the late sixties when a clinical study found no association between diet and acne lesions. Later this same study was criticized for a number of design flaws. In the last few years a number of articles and clinical studies pointing in favor of the diet acne connection has forced us to re-examine this potential connection between nutrition and the acne process.

Acne Vulgaris is defined as a condition caused by chronic sebaceous gland inflammation characterized by comedones, papules, and pustules of sebaceous areas — face, chest, and back resolving with scarring reaction. It is the most common skin disease seen by Dermatologists. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

TIPS FOR CREATING A RETAIL VERTICAL
TO ENHANCE YOUR SERVICES

By Wendy Lewis, Contributing Editor & Advisor

Successful cosmetic practices and medspas offer patients the education they need to keep their skin healthy and youthful, and provide preventive as well as corrective care. Think of skin care as an adjunct to your existing practice and a convenient service for your patients that enhances the treatments and procedures you already offer. They enjoy the convenience of one-stop shopping and having a professional skin care expert or physician explain the use of a comprehensive program customized for their individual skin type and concerns. Skin care buyers are becoming more sophisticated and knowledgeable about the physiology of the skin, and demand exceptional performance from their personal care products in all categories.

The Internet has created a new generation of on-line skin care buyers who are using the internet to pre-shop as well as to purchase and replenish. Distribution channels are also highly diversified; cosmeceuticals can be purchased from mass-market and direct marketing retailers, prestige retailers, specialty stores, spas, salons, gyms, and clinics, as well as via a growing crop of on-line portals.

To maintain your professional ethics you should ensure that patients feel they are getting reputable products that are safe and effective, and that offer value for the price point. Doctors who dispense in their office should make the best interests of their patients their highest priority.

MARKETING & MERCHANDISING
Although the factors of space, staffing, storage, and product selection can seem overwhelming, adding skin care to your practice or upgrading your skin care vertical is a lot easier and less expensive than you might think. The start-up costs are relatively low in comparison to adding a piece of capital equipment. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

A MINIMALLY-INVASIVE ALTERNATIVE
USING THE BRAVA EXTERNAL
TISSUE EXPANDER

By Roger K. Khouri, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Breast cancer patients who have lost all or part of their breast(s) to cancer now have a revolutionary, minimally-invasive reconstructive alternative available to them. No longer are the choices limited to the traditional implant or flap surgery which inflict additional trauma and scars. Our new breakthrough technique regenerates an entire, sensate, natural-feeling breast mound, in-situ, restoring what cancer and surgery have taken away.

CREATING ENTIRE BREASTS WITH BRAVA, LIPO, AND MICRO-FAT TRANSFER
In the nineties, I was professor of plastic surgery and a recognized world expert in microsurgery flap breast reconstructions. However, I was always concerned that this was far too much surgery to just recreate a patch-like breast mound. I have, therefore, spent the past 15 years refining a more patient friendly, less invasive, superior alternative. This new micro-fat grafting procedure begins with the patient wearing an external expander device called Brava, to prepare the recipient breast for the grafts.

The BRAVA device, a bra-like external tissue expander shown to enlarge breast volume and increase blood flow, is worn 10 hours/day
(while sleeping) for four weeks post-mastectomy or lumpectomy. Not only does it expand the skin, it also causes swelling of the mastectomy or lumpectomy defect to regenerate a breast-like mound through the expansion of the remaining tissues and nerves. This creates an adequate matrix into which fat is later injected.

Fat is then removed from one area of the patient’s body and meticulously injected back as hundreds of tiny individual droplets at the breast defect site that has been enlarged by the Brava expansion. These micro-fat grafts (autologous grafts) are harvested by gentle liposuction from the patient’s thighs, buttocks, and stomach – wherever there is fat to spare. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

IT IS ALL ABOUT PERSPECTIVE

By Ron Tracy, Organic & Natural Enterprise Group

Why are we doing this to ourselves? What benefit is there in striving for something we will never obtain? Why is it that the males of our species seem to physically glide through life not beating themselves up, and the females worry themselves silly over every wrinkle and pucker? Does the phrase Anti-Aging even make sense?

We age. We have to. That’s the way it was written. It used to be that humans found value in their character and the way they refined their character over time into something solid and shining, like a precious gem that starts out looking like any old rock and ends up a ruby or sapphire or diamond. How many of us would give up our wrinkled, plump grandparents for tight-faced counterparts with tummy tucks and liposuction? Would we love Grandma and Grandpa any better? And what if Grandma was competing for your boyfriend?

Come on, everybody, let’s get real! Get real for our health, our well-being, our joy of life, and for the message we send to others, especially our children. It used to be that humans found value in their character and the way they refined their character over time into something solid and shining, like a precious gem that starts out looking like any old rock and ends up a ruby or sapphire or diamond.

Does that mean we don’t take care of ourselves and let ourselves go, like the house on the block with chipping paint and a yard full of weeds? Quite the contrary. It means that we need to do the things that give us a bountiful, meaningful, healthy, and joyful life, while respecting our bodies and the neighborhood. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

We are all educated on the damaging effects of the sun on our skin - skin cancer, premature aging, sunspots, and wrinkles - and encourage patients to take heed and use sun protection when going out in the sun. Even with the risk of skin cancer posted clearly on the wall, the tanning salon industry still flourishes with customers, growing to a seven billion dollar industry annually. Teenagers and adults alike flock to the beach all summer long, soaking in more than their share of vitamin D. Are they getting enough? How safe is the sunscreen they are repeatedly applying all summer long?

DANGERS OF SUNSCREEN
Oxybenzone is a synthetic chemical and a sunscreen ingredient that should be avoided whenever possible. Oxybenzone is an endocrine disruptor which can affect the nervous system. It penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream. Oxybenzone is a synthetic chemical and a sunscreen that should be avoided whenever possible. It is an endocrine disruptor which can affect the nervous system.

It has been linked to cancer and creates free radicals which, when exposed to the sun, are also harmful. The Center for Disease Control conducted bio-monitoring surveys in which they detected oxybenzone in the bodies of ninety-seven percent of Americans tested. Parabens contained within a plethora of beauty products, including sunscreen, are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives.

The options for treating wrinkles have increased dramatically over the last 10 years. We have all seen the expansion in the use of less invasive modalities to improve skin tone, minimize rentals, and sun damage. However, despite the ever-increasing popularity of less invasive procedures, deep laser resurfacing remains a benchmark procedure. No matter how much this scan is injected, heated, or filled using the newest technologies, it is still difficult to replicate the results of one deep resurfacing treatment.

Removing the entire epidermis and upper dermis usually takes away all but the deepest wrinkles and sun damage. Of course, the procedure does not reposition and lift tissues the way a cheek or neck lift does, but it is almost like a surgery in that it requires general anesthesia and a more significant recovery. Patients sometimes remain pink for weeks to even months afterwards.

Advancements in resurfacing technology like dual-mode Nd:YAG-Erbium lasers have reduced recovery times, but patients are still looking for deep resurfacing results in treatments that require only local anesthesia and that result in less downtime.

Fortunately, as the laser market continues to evolve, new treatments are being developed that can in fact create more dramatic results with less downtime. In my office in Chicago, IL, we combine the deep resurfacing abilities of the Sciton ProFractional Laser with ablative MicroLaserPeel (www.sciton.com) in order to minimize wrinkling, decrease dyschromias, age spots and sun damage, and improve the overall tone of the skin, much like a deep resurfacing treatment. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

By Jan Watson, J.P. Watson Group
Advisor & Contributing Editor

A psychological recession is not just an industry buzz word, but a real phenomenon that holds real consequences. The United Kingdom experienced a psychological recession from 1990-1994, a phenomenon at that time of unknown duration and complexity. In 1990 Dai Williams, an Occupational Psychologist, started combining field notes of colleagues and other papers written over 8 years of observances to help others survive the UK Recession.

Williams created a working definition of Recession Fatigue as “A form of chronic psychological stress caused or exacerbated by an individual’s economic circumstances, and severe and prolonged enough to degrade their personal effectiveness in work or non-work situations.” For at least a third of the population the UK Recession was like a war without an enemy, causing thousands of fatalities and damaging the lives of millions more. A war might have been easier to understand and justify.

A psychological recession is much more than just an economic cycle. As it was in the UK and now in the United States, people are living a nightmare of broken careers, families, and future hope. When people are scared and depressed for a long time, despair and fear replace confidence and optimism. Judith M. Bardwick’s book, “One Foot out the Door,” describes a psychological recession as an “emotional state in which people feel extremely vulnerable to economic hardship.” People view current times and the future with the perception of the world as a risky place in which they have little or no control. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

By Christine Lapointe, Contributing Editor & Advisor,
& Laura Jackson, Aesthetics 360°

We recently had the opportunity to reconnect with Joseph Eviatar, M.D., F.A.C.S., from Chelsea Eye and Cosmetic Surgery Associates in New York. The practice, originally founded in 1989 by Christopher Coad, M.D., F.A.C.S., was later joined by Dr. Eviatar in 1993. Ulysses Scarpidis, M.D., M.P.A., Ashley Fazzary, O.D., and Jane MacKinnon, NYS licensed aesthetician, most recently joined the group. Through the years the practice has continued to develop, providing a team approach to address all of its patients’ needs.

Because of the unique practice make-up, which encompasses both Ophthalmology and Cosmetics, we asked Dr. Eviatar to define the
practice philosophy and share how it has afforded these doctors the ability to gain long-term loyal patients. “Unlike laser centers and clinics that specialize in only one procedure, the team approach to care at Chelsea Eye and Cosmetic Surgery Associates means that each patient gets customized treatments by talented and experienced physicians who constantly remain on the cutting
edge of their specialties.”

Aesthetics 360° questioned if potential patients and clients consider this practice an ophthalmology-based practice offering some
plastics and med spa services, or do patients really see it as a comprehensive practice offering both necessary and life-enhancing procedures. Dr. Eviatar explained that this is a story about offering a comprehensive approach to medicine and consciously increasing word-of-mouth and longterm loyalty patients. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

The CelluliteDX Genetic Test for Moderate to Severe Cellulite (gynoid lipodystrophy) recently introduced by DermaGenoma, Inc. (www.dermagenoma.com) allows physicians to evaluate women’s risk for developing Nurnberger-Muller grade 2 (or severity of cellulite. Early screening for women who are likely to develop moderate to severe cellulite could allow preventative therapeutic and life style choices.

Many cellulite treatments currently exist; however, some of these therapies have limited and/or questionable efficacy. Early initiation of cellulite treatment may achieve maximal therapeutic benefits, including halting the progression and severity of cellulite. In addition, the genetic marker used in the CelluliteDX Genetic Test (www.cellulitedx.com) may open the door to an improved understanding of cellulite pathogenesis and more effective cellulite therapeutics. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

By Robert W. Gordon, D.D.S.

Full luscious lips have always been sought after. Whether using liners to accentuate lip size or using more permanent methods of
enhancement, a prominent pout is what women want. Over the past decade, the popularity surrounding lip augmentation has
significantly grown.

Patients are not only partaking in the constant search of eternal youth, but the aspiration of sultry, sexy lips at any age. While the majority of lip and perioral augmentations up until now has been specifically focused on anti-aging, the aesthetics of lip enhancement are broadening, now appealing to individuals simply looking to improve their natural lips. The Vermillion Dollar Lips standard for lip and perioral augmentation allows doctors to accomplish the six signature lip styles designed to work with an individual’s unique set of lips, as well as their specific facial structure. READ ON - Click Here to Download Article

About Dr. Gordon
Robert W. Gordon, D.D.S. has a passion for art and facial aesthetics. This passion shines through in his unique approach to lip and perioral augmentation: a direct result of his background in art education. Dr. Gordon lectures often, instructing oral/facial augmenters on his classification, diagnostic and reconstructive lip and perioral augmentation techniques. Dr. Gordon graduated from Marquette
University School of Dentistry in 1997 and continued his education in a residency program in periodontics, as well as additional oral/surgery training. In addition, Dr. Gordon was accepted to one of the nation’s top-ranked art schools: Savannah School of Art and Design, where he was accepted into the master’s program of Fine Arts in Painting prior to relocating to Florida. While practicing predominantly in cosmetic dentistry, he became aware of the intimate correlation of cosmetic dentistry and lip and perioral augmentation. It was this find that led him to author Vermilion Dollar Lips: a groundbreaking textbook that addresses the science and art of lip and perioral augmentation. In addition Dr. Gordon has been featured in several peer review journals. Dr. Gordon’s mission is to optimize lip and perioral aesthetics through the advancement of current techniques, dissemination of cutting-edge knowledge and the union of the vast body of practitioners participating in oral/facial augmentation.

Cynosure’s Smartlipo Triplex(TM) Technology Shows Superior Skin Tightening and Fat Disruption in Laser-Assisted Lipolysis

Research Presented at 2010 American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery Annual Conference

WESTFORD, Mass. /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –Cynosure, Inc. (Nasdaq: CYNO) presented a new study that demonstrates the clinical benefits of using a 1440 nm wavelength in laser-assisted lipolysis to disrupt fat tissue and tighten skin through tissue coagulation. The study, led by Barry DiBernardo, M.D., Medical Director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery, is one of six Cynosure-related abstracts being presented this week at the 2010 American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) Annual Conference in Arizona.

Dr. DiBernardo’s study evaluated the fat-disruption and tissue tightening that occurred in abdominal tissue treated with three separate wavelengths, including a 1440 nm laser. The 1440 nm wavelength is the heart of Cynosure’s Smartlipo Triplex, which was introduced in late 2009 as the newest member of Cynosure’s family of workstations for laser-assisted lipolysis. The Smartlipo Triplex is the highest-power laser energy device approved for fat removal by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“At the same power and doses, tissue treated with the 1440 nm laser disrupted a larger area of fat tissue and demonstrated greater tissue tightening effects than the other wavelengths,” Dr. DiBernardo said. “The conclusion that can be drawn from this research is that, in terms of the efficiency of fat removal and collagen remodeling, wavelength and laser energy play an integral role in patient outcomes. In comparing these three unique wavelengths, the results from the 1440 nm laser demonstrated the most pronounced histological effects.”

Michael Davin, president and chief executive officer of Cynosure, said, “The research presented at ASLMS further validates the investment we have made to increase the efficiency and performance of our Smartlipo technology with the addition of a 1440 nm wavelength. The higher-powered laser, combined with enhancements such as SmartSense with ThermaGuide, which monitors and controls the flow of energy during laser-assisted lipolysis, gives our technology a strong competitive advantage in the marketplace. Moreover, the study highlights a tenet of our corporate strategy - to support our brands with comprehensive scientific research.”

Highlights from other Smartlipo-related abstracts being presented at ASLMS include:

* A 15-patient study conducted by John Millard, M.D. of the Millard Plastic Surgery Center in Colorado, who describes the successful use of the Smartlipo Triplex to not only improve body contour but also to highlight the three-dimensional muscular definition of areas including the arms, legs and abdomen. “All outcomes were considered good or excellent, with adequate improvement in muscle definition,” Dr. Millard reported.
* Plastic surgeons Robert Gotkin, M.D. and Alberto Goldman, M.D., used the dual-wavelength Smartlipo MPX in a 20-patient study of women who underwent laser lipoabdominoplasty, a procedure to reduce the elevation of the abdominal flap. All patients tolerated the surgery well, without major complications. In comparison with the traditional and more invasive abdominoplasty procedure, the researchers concluded that the Multiplex procedure increased the contraction of skin and fat tissue, reduced the operative trauma associated with the procedure and enhanced the patients’ post-operative recovery experience.

“We are delighted with the results of these clinical studies, which highlight both the safety and efficacy of our device within potential expanded applications for our Smartlipo technology,” Davin said.

In addition to the research on laser-assisted lipolysis, Cynosure’s technology was featured in the following presentations at the ASLMS Annual Conference:

    * “A Prospective Study of the Improvement in Peri-Orbital Wrinkles and Eyebrow Elevation with a Novel Fractional CO2 Laser,” Bruce E. Katz, M.D., Clinical Professor, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, Director, JUVA Skin & Laser Center, Director, Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Clinic, Mt. Sinai Medical Center, New York, New York; Dvora Ancona, University of Pavia, Milan, Italy
* Combined Therapy for Neck Rejuvenation: Fractional Non-Ablative Laser and Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid Based Gel of Non-Animal Origin: A Clinicopathologic Study with Special Attention Given to the Histology,” Adriana Ribe, Natalia Ribe, Institut Dra Natalia Ribe, Barcelona, Spain
* “Treatment of Carbon Tattoos in a Porcine Model with a Novel 758 nm, 500 Picosecond Laser,” Leonid Izikson, William Farinelli, Zeina Tannous, Fedrnanda Sakamoto, R. Rox Anderson, Wellman Center for Photomedicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts
