Thermage Introduces New Larger ThermaTip™ at the ASDS-ACMMSCO Combined Annual Meeting

Thermage® introduced the 3.0cm2 ThermaTipTM enabling Thermage procedure time savings, reducing procedure cost, and improving patient comfort. The company made the announcement at the combined annual meeting of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) and the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology (ACMMSCO) in Atlanta (Booth #503).

A multi-center clinical study showed that compared to the 1.5 cm2, the larger 3.0cm2 ThermaTip allows physicians to save time and increase patient comfort. In addition, the expanded treatment range allows Thermage to be performed on the most sensitive patients.

“I’ve found that patients treated with the 3.0cm2 are more comfortable and enjoy shorter treatment times due to fewer pulses,” said Michael Kaminer, M.D. “The new tip delivers consistent efficacy and improved time efficiency, which will make Thermage easier to incorporate into a busy practice.”

The 3.0cm2 tip has twice the surface area as the 1.5 cm2 tip allowing the same area of skin to be covered in half the time. In the multi-center study, the 3.0cm2 tip had the same immediate efficacy as the 1.5cm2 tip. “The introduction of the 3.0cm2 ThermaTip signals our commitment to deliver on our promise of providing a platform of tips to meet our customers’ needs,” said Stephen J. Fanning, President and Chief Executive Officer at Thermage. “We continue to look at ways to make the procedure faster and more comfortable.”

As part of Thermage’s partnership with its customers, the price of the 3.0cm2 is the same as the 1.5cm2. Covering more surface area with each pulse will result in fewer REPS and higher profitability per procedure.

Study Results Reaffirm the Effectiveness of the Velasmooth™ In Reducing the Appearance of Cellulite

Syneron Medical Ltd. (NASDAQ: ELOS) announced the publication of clinical data on its VelaSmoothTM system in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy (2005:7). This study, led by Dr. Tina Alster and Dr. Elizabeth L. Tanzi of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery, found that the VelaSmooth by Syneron and its unique elôsTM (electro-optical synergy) technology provided safe and effective treatment of cellulite to study participants. Ninety percent of the study participants had an overall clinical improvement in the appearance of their cellulite after treatment with the VelaSmooth.

The study, “Cellulite Treatment Using a Novel Combination Radiofrequency, Infrared Light, and Mechanical Tissue Manipulation Device,” reveals clinical results of the VelaSmooth among 20 adult participants with various skin types and moderate bilateral tight and buttock cellulite. The clinical results of this seven-month study also documented a reduction in circumferential thigh measurements by 0.8 cm on the treatment side. Overall, this study reported a 50 percent improvement in cellulite appearance one month after the series of treatments.

“Our study reaffirms our belief that the VelaSmooth is the most effective treatment option to reduce the appearance of cellulite on the market today,” said Tina Alster, M.D., founding director, Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery in Washington D.C. and clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University. “We were also able to demonstrate the longevity of the treatment’s success, as the results obtained with the use of the VelaSmooth were prolonged for several months after the series of sessions—prompting most of the study patients to be treated on the non-treated thigh area. We believe that the right combination of technologies united in this medical device was key to the high satisfaction levels reported in this study.”

FDA Clears Fraxel® Laser for Treatment of Troublesome Skin Disorder, Melasma

It is estimated that nearly six million women in the Unites States are affected with melasma, a skin condition presenting as brown patches, usually occurring on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, and upper lip. While there is no precise cause of melasma, it has been associated with pregnancy (referred to as “mask of pregnancy”), birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy used after menopause. Sun exposure is usually a factor as well.

Previously, this stubborn skin condition was resistant to all available therapies including laser and pulsed light treatments due to lackluster results, significant downtime and the high risk of complications. With the July 2005 FDA approval of the Fraxel® laser for melasma treatment, smiles are returning to the faces of patients who thought they would never be able to remove the mask of this condition.

According to Dr. Mitchell Chasin, Medical Director of Reflections, center for skin and body, “No other treatment has come close to improving skin affected with melasma like the Fraxel® laser. My patients have seen dramatic skin improvement within the course of treatment.”

The Fraxel® laser provides a unique approach to treating melasma in that it utilizes millions of microscopic thermal spots to gently resurface only portions of skin at a time, penetrating deep enough to eliminate the cells that cause melasma. To explain further, says Dr. Chasin, “Since the Fraxel® laser affects only a fraction of the skin at a time, excessive and undesirable pigmentation is treated while healthy tissue is spared. Post treatment inflammation is also avoided.” Dr. Chasin performs the Fraxel® laser procedure for melasma patients at Reflections center for skin and body in both Livingston and Bridgewater, NJ.

exCel Cosmeceuticals, Inc. Partners With Orient MG For China Market

exCel Cosmeceuticals, Inc. has partnered with Orient MG to sell the company’s AFA skin care products to medical professionals in China. Orient MG has been distributing medical products and devices in the Pacific Rim since 1997.

“China’s evolving economic prosperity, the magnitude of its populace, and the market’s demand for high-quality products which are specifically formulated to treat ethnic skin types were the determining factors for entering the China market,” says Martin Davidson, President of exCel. According to Davidson, “Orient MG’s experience in dealing with medical professionals who recognize the science in formulating ingredients specific to an individual’s ethnicity greatly assists us in positioning our products in China.”

exCel’s patented AFA products, which include in-office peels and at-home topicals, have proven to be effective in treating all skin types and colors and are currently distributed to medical skin care professionals in over 34 countries, including Japan and Russia.

Euromonitor International’s most recent report estimates that cosmetics sales in China have almost doubled in the past five years, and experts predict that the market will continue to grow in the next few years. Skin care products is one of the categories that has shown the most growth, and more disposable income accounts for the significant growth in the upper-mass market segment for upper- end products. China’s cosmetics market is now valued at $7.9 billion, and the market for cosmetics is now the eight largest in the world and Asia’s second largest, only behind Japan.

RTI International to Support National Initiative…

RTI International to Support National Initiative to Create Interoperable Electronic Health Records

RTI International has been awarded an $11.5 million contract from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to support efforts to develop the National Health Information Network, a system in which electronic health records would be stored and shared among health care providers nationwide.

Establishing the network represents a critical shift in the nation’s health care system which is aimed at increasing the “portability” of health care as well as the accuracy of medical diagnoses, treatments, and prescriptions while also reducing health care costs.

The challenge in establishing the network is to develop technology and business process standards which allow nationwide access and interoperability while keeping the patient information secure, protecting individual patient privacy, and ensuring the appropriate degree of patient control over their records.

Under the terms of the 18-month contract, RTI will form the Health Information Security and Privacy Collaboration (HISPC), a new partnership consisting of a multidisciplinary team of experts and the National Governors Association. This team will work with approximately 40 states or territorial governments to assess and develop plans to address variations in organization-level business policies and state laws that affect privacy and security practices which may pose challenges to interoperable health information exchange.

“We are very pleased to support this important initiative by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to improve the delivery of health care for all Americans,” said Chuck Thompson, vice president of RTI’s Federal Healthcare Optimization and Strategic Solutions. “We look forward to working closely with AHRQ, representatives of state governments, the National Governors Association and the many other stakeholders involved in this national effort.”

Healthcare Supply Leader Expands Presence

Professional Disposables International (PDI) receives exclusive license for the manufacture and marketing of new FDA approved Chlorhexidine Gluconate Antimicrobial Swabs and Swabsticks. Chlorascrub™, a new Chlorhexidine Gluconate-based (CHG) product, heralds the expansion of PDI’s presence in the Pharmaceutical market. PDI’s new Chlorascrub features 3.15 percent Chlorhexidine Gluconate and 70 percent Isopropyl Alcohol in pre-moistened swab, swabstick and maxi swabstick delivery systems. PDI, the leading supplier of pre-moistened wipes for infection control, prevention and skin antisepsis, is expanding its line of products to address customer demand for ease of use and affordability.

“As many as 98,000 Americans die each year from hospital-acquired infections. Surgical site infections account for nearly 15 percent of these nosocomial infections,” said Linda Autore, President of PDI, the Healthcare Division of Nice-Pak Products, Inc. “Chlorascrub will be a welcome addition to the healthcare professional in helping prevent infections because, until now, the alternatives have been expensive CHG products or less effective iodine and alcohol products.”

Chlorascrub may be used for a variety of antiseptic skin preparation needs such as peripheral IV’s, blood cultures and minor surgical procedures.

PDI’s Chlorascrub products will be available in October 2005. Chlorascrub™, the CHG Swab™, will be sold in quantities of 100-swabs per box, while Chlorascrub™, the CHG Swabstick™, will be sold in 50-swabsticks per box, and Chlorascrub™, the CHG Maxi Swabstick™, will be sold in 30–maxi swabsticks per box. Chlorascrub, the CHG Swab, the CHG Swabstick, and the CHG Maxi Swabstick are trademarks of Nice-Pak Products.
