New Topical Peptide and Botanical Blend

A new topical treatment from PCA Advanced Skin Care Systems visibly restores lip fullness and reduces furrows non-invasively. Peptide Lip Therapy gives lips a lush appearance with a novel pairing of the latest in peptide technology and BMX COMPLEXä, a moisture boosting blend derived from barley and tomato extracts.

Clinical studies of BMX COMPLEXä showed visible improvement in attracting and retaining moisture after two weeks with a 40% increase in hydration and a 30% reduction in flaking and moisture loss. The natural peptide, GlyHisLys, also delivered dramatic tissue restructuring and moisturizing properties with an average of 40% increase in lip volume and a 30% decrease in lip lines after 29 days of use.

Peptide Lip Therapy’s advanced delivery system uses a lipid complex to maximize penetration into the stratum corneum and antioxidants to strengthen the lip’s natural defenses against dryness, flaking and damage from environmental exposure.

PCA Advanced Skin Care Systems is an industry leader in the development of chemical peels and advanced topicals to aid in correcting acne, eczema, hyperpigmentation, psoriasis, rosacea and premature aging due to sun damage. Company founder, Margaret Ancira, revolutionized the skin care industry in 1990 with the first non-prescription, science-based skin care products for physicians. PCA Professional™ Products, PCA® MEN, and PCA SKIN ® Clinical Care Products are used by clinical practices in 60 countries.

New Web Domain Identifies Doctors at a Glance

Citing physician demand for a medical Internet domain, MaxMD, a Jersey City, NJ, based service provider, has launched the .md domain. The new domain means doctors, hospitals, and universities can now use .md, rather than .com or .edu to show their affiliation with the medical community.

The domain is available in the United States and more than 90 other countries. Basic registration includes the .md domain, a Web card to activate the domain, and a secure email account for $150 per year.

“The domain was officially launched last December, but MaxMD has been registering members for about two years, mainly through word of mouth,” says Seanne Murray, Senior Vice President of MaxMD. The domain has approximately 10,000 members, including individual physicians, practice groups, medical institutions, and universities. The company expects membership to climb to 50,000 by the end of the year.

MaxMD (www.max.md) acquired the exclusive rights to market and distribute the .md domain in 2003. The company then conducted research to determine what physicians and others in the health care community want from the Internet. “Physicians want to have a place where they can be identified as medical experts online, much like educators identify themselves with .edu and nonprofits identify themselves with .org,” says Murray.

Salt-A-Peel™ MacroDermabrasion Therapy

As they enter their sixties, baby boomers expect to be granted three wishes: to enjoy good health, remain active, and look fit. The boomer generation and their younger counterparts understand that taking good care of their skin will help them continue to look as good as they feel. As their trusted gynecologist/obstetrician, your patients look to you to bring them proven technology to safeguard good health, including glowing skin.

A more natural perspective on healthy aging has emerged as a priority for people interested in maintaining vitality. Meeting this need, Salt-A-Peel MacroDermabrasion Therapy, the original sodium chloride-based skin rejuvenation system from IntegreMed, offers a natural approach to skin renewal. The next-generation, environmentally friendly system will be on exhibit at the 54th Annual Clinical Meeting of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, May 6-10, in Washington, D.C ., providing an opportunity for attendees to learn how Salt-A-Peel MacroDermabrasion Therapy can help expand their patient base and boost the bottom line.

Salt-A-Peel MacroDermabrasion Therapy’s unique, proprietary crystal delivery system offers a more effective treatment than conventional microdermabrasion methods. This therapy is an easily tolerated, non-invasive process which uses water-soluble, non-toxic salt—not an artificially created chemical substance with potential health hazards—to safely and gently abrade the skin. Patients experience immediate benefits and enjoy longer-lasting results in fewer treatments.

The MicroPro S10 MacroDermabrasion System with Smart Sensing Technology™ activates the treatment when the handpiece comes into contact with tissue and turns off when the handpiece is removed. Using adjustable positive pressure, not a vacuum, the topmost layers of skin (stratum corneum) are efficiently removed without excessive flushing/redness (erythema), edema or trauma to the area. Twice as much tissue is removed per pass than with alternative treatments. The ability to cover larger areas of skin with fewer passes minimizes discomfort and expedites treatment time.

Beautiful Forever Presents Findings at Healthcare Retail ’06

Beautiful Forever, a leading provider of medical business spa consulting services, is energized by the growing national trend to bring medspa services under the hospital umbrella. The trend to bring medspas to hospitals is rapidly gaining momentum nationwide, and the new revenue stream makes this trend a winner on hospitals’ ROI scorecard.

Heralding this trend, CEO Cheryl Whitman presented “Executing a Successful Hospital Retail Model of Business” at the recent Healthcare Retail ’06 which underscored the groundswell interest coast-to-coast from hospital executives eager to embrace this new trend as a major revenue producing business unit.

Hospitals nationwide are on a fact-finding and action-oriented mission to enhance business revenue by bringing ”in-house” their own medspa retail services, representing a growing business challenge to the free-standing medspas which have popped up during the last decade.

Says Whitman, “I do not believe the medical spa industry is heading into supermarkets and drugstores—instead the trend is moving towards the hospital retail business. Medical spas are growing. Hospitals want to be on the edge of new technology and are for the first time acknowledging the need to embark marketing and website programs to grow their retail businesses. And the reason for this is the widely accepted notion that wellness is key to staying youthful as well as healthful; and, therefore, there is no better place to get both than at your community hospital – a place you trust and know.”

Court Reschedules Trial Start Date in Palomar’s Patent Infringement Suit against Cutera

Palomar Medical Technologies Inc (Nasdaq: PMTI) announced that the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts moved the start of the trial from May 30, 2006, to June 19, 2006, due to scheduling conflicts at the Court. In this lawsuit, Palomar has accused Cutera’s CoolGlide Laser Systems, including the CoolGlide CV, Excel, Vantage and Xeo, of infringing U.S. Patent No. 5,735,844. Palomar has an exclusive license to this patent from the General Hospital Corporation in Boston, Massachusetts.

Palomar is a leading researcher and developer of light-based systems for cosmetic treatments. Palomar pioneered the optical hair removal field when, in 1997, it introduced the first high-powered laser hair removal system. Since then, many of the major advances in light-based hair removal have been based on Palomar technology.

There are now millions of light-based cosmetic procedures performed around the world every year in physician offices, clinics, spas, and salons. Palomar is testing many new and exciting applications to further advance the hair removal market and other cosmetic applications. Palomar is uniquely focused on developing proprietary light-based technology for introduction to the mass markets.

Cynosure’s Cynergy Workstation with MultiPlex Technology

Cynosure, Inc. (NASDAQ: CYNO), a leading developer and manufacturer of a broad array of light-based aesthetic treatment systems, announced that it has received pre-market approval from the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) for its Cynergy vascular laser system with MultiPlex(TM) technology.

“We are excited about the opportunity to sell our leading-edge system in the emerging South Korean market,” said Cynosure Chief Executive Officer Michael R. Davin. “The Cynergy workstation with MultiPlex technology represents our second major product introduction in Korea this year.

“The Cynergy workstation with MultiPlex technology marks an innovative development in the treatment of dermatological vascular conditions through the use of laser-based technology,” Davin said. “This system is the culmination of significant research and development efforts internally and collaboratively with physicians at the forefront of their specialties.”

The Cynergy workstation with MultiPlex technology is the first system to enable the rapid sequential emission of two wavelengths from the same fiber optic — a pulse-dye laser and an Nd:YAG laser — with a short time delay between the two pulses. The time delay increases safety and efficacy of laser treatment.

In clinical studies, treatments using the Cynergy workstation with MultiPlex technology have shown an increased depth of penetration of energy and improved effectiveness in treating portwine stains, and improved outcomes for facial and leg telangiectasia when compared to treatments using a pulse-dye laser or an Nd:YAG laser individually. Previously, the limited efficacy of either a pulse-dye laser or an Nd:YAG laser in the treatment of portwine stains, hemangiomas and spider veins made those conditions resistant to treatment. Cynosure’s MultiPlex technology, however, allows for customized, patient-specific treatments using these two lasers together, which improves efficacy, decreases treatment lengths and shortens patient downtime.
