October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the American Cancer Society continues to recommend mammograms for all women age 40 and older every year to help detect breast cancer early. This year alone, an estimated 178,480 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and an estimated 40,460 will die from the disease. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed non-skin cancer in women, and the second leading cause of cancer death (after lung cancer). In Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, nearly 1,900 breast cancer cases will be diagnosed during 2007, and more than 400 residents will die from breast cancer.

Although breast cancer death rates among women have been decreasing steadily since 1990 due to earlier detection and better treatments, mammography rates are now declining according to a recent study. This raises cause for concern, as studies continue to show that one of the most important ways to make strides in the fight against breast cancer is to ensure that women continue getting their yearly mammogram, which can detect cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages.

Unfortunately, millions of women are missing potential lifesaving breast cancer screening due to lack of insurance. A recent study in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the Society, shows that uninsured and Medicaid insured women were about 2.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with advanced breast cancer than women with private insurance. This study also found that African American and Hispanic women were more likely than white women to be diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, regardless of insurance status.

“As we continue to stress the importance of mammograms, it is also important to raise the issue of access to the proper screenings for the disease,” said John Morgan, DrPH., volunteer on the Inland Empire Leadership Council for the American Cancer Society, and a Cancer Epidemiologist for the State. “As critical as mammograms are, it is of great concern to make sure all women can get a mammogram without worrying about cost. Every woman deserves a mammogram every year. That’s why the Society and its sister advocacy organization, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, are working to ensure that all women have access to this lifesaving screening.” Dr. Morgan added that, “risk of death from breast cancer is higher in the Inland Empire than the California average, in part, because of underutilization of mammographic screening among poor women, regardless of their race.”

In addition to mammograms, the Society also recommends the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) screening for some women at increased risk for breast cancer. For most women who have a 20 to 25 percent or greater lifetime risk of the disease, according to risk assessment tools based mainly on family history, screening with MRI and mammography should begin at age 30 years and continue for as long as a woman is in good health. The Society’s guidelines are a critical step in helping to define who should be screened using MRI in addition to mammography, as women at very high risk of breast cancer can be diagnosed much earlier when combining the two technologies rather than mammography alone.

“The American Cancer Society offers a variety of free programs and services to help women with breast cancer,” said Joanne Cousino, chair of the Inland Empire Leadership Council for the American Cancer Society. “Through its Cancer Resource Network, the Society provides services such as
transportation to treatment and free lodging near cancer treatment centers, and offers programs that connect recently diagnosed women with women who have survived breast cancer to talk about the experience.” The Society also offers a program that helps female cancer patients learn beauty techniques to address appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatments, called “Look Good…Feel Better.” Up-to-date cancer information and referrals to local programs and other community resources can be obtained.

A free mammogram reminder is available for friends and family to encourage the women in their lives to get their yearly mammograms, and can be found at www.cancer.org/mammogramreminder.

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 13 regional Divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States. New GFX Technology Hits the Market as the First Effective Alternative to BOTOX® Cosmetic

New GFX Technology Hits the Market as the First
Effective Alternative to BOTOX® Cosmetic

(Livingston, NJ) GFX is a new, revolutionary and recently FDA approved treatment used to treat glabella frown lines (lines between the eyebrows), eliminating the need for Botox® Cosmetic injections. GFX is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a novel bipolar radio frequency technology to relax the tense frowning muscles of the forehead.

With the GFX technology, a tiny puncture is made in the skin and the GFX needle probe is then inserted. The physician then locates the specific area of the forehead to be treated through a painless process of electrical stimulation. A controlled dose of radio frequency energy is then applied, ablating a tiny section of the targeted area. Ablation of a section of motor nerves causes immediate relaxation of the muscle, softening lines and wrinkles. The nerve-disabling result is similar to that of a Botox® injection, yet GFX injections produce an immediate result which can last up to 18 months and sometimes longer, a dramatic increase from the 4 month duration of Botox® Cosmetic injections.

Dr. Mitchell Chasin, board certified laser surgeon and Medical Director of Reflections, center for skin and body in Livingston and Bridgewater, NJ is one of the first physicians in the country to acquire the GFX system and describes the treatment to be safe, and the results, remarkable. “This is truly the first and only alternative to Botox® Cosmetic that is showing dramatic results for treating furrow lines between the eyebrows,” says Chasin. “The GFX technology is the future of treating dynamic wrinkles without the need for Botox® Cosmetic injections or surgery”. The need for less frequent visits and immediate results will likely appeal to present Botox® users as well as to people who refrain from using Botox® due to fears of an injectable toxin.

Botox® Cosmetic injections are presently the most popular aesthetic procedure in the United States, with over 4 million treatments performed last year alone.

GFX technology is manufactured by Advanced Cosmetic Intervention, Inc., which holds an exclusive world wide license that targets motor nerves for ablation. Bipolar radio frequency has been used in lifesaving cardiology treatments for over 10 years. Advanced Cosmetic Intervention has adapted this safe and proven GFX technology to disable nerves connected to facial muscles that contract and cause wrinkles.

Candela Receives FDA Clearance for Its Serenity(TM) Device for Additional Aesthetic Laser Applications

Candela Receives FDA Clearance for Its Serenity(TM) Device for Additional Aesthetic Laser Applications

First system of its type to receive clearance for pain reduction

Candela Corporation (NASDAQ:CLZR) today announced that it received an additional FDA clearance for the Serenity(TM) device using Pneumatic Skin Flattening (PSF(TM)) technology. This clearance enables the use of the Serenity(TM) device for the reduction of pain during all laser and intense pulse light (IPL) treatments. According to Millennium Research, the worldwide installed base of laser and IPLs is estimated to be 70,000 worldwide.

Gerard E. Puorro, President and Chief Executive Officer, said, “We are pleased to announce the receipt of this additional FDA approval for our innovative PSF(TM) technology, which we obtained through our acquisition of Inolase last March. This clearance is a significant milestone in the roll-out of the PSF(TM) technology and enables us to further implement this technology across a wide range of applications and devices.”

“Patients often discontinue their aesthetic laser treatments because of pain. The PSF(TM) technology relies on the Gate theory for pain reduction which inhibits the transmission of pain signals to the brain, making treatments more tolerable and thus, improving outcomes,” said Nicole M. Shugrue, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Candela. “The expanded product claim will allow practitioners to differentiate their aesthetic practice and improve patient retention by offering this device as an adjunct to their entire laser and intense pulse light aesthetic treatment platform.”

Eric F. Bernstein, M.D., Laser Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology Centers, Bryn Mawr, PA, who performed some of the studies leading to FDA clearance stated, “The Serenity(TM) device with the PSF(TM) technology has enabled treatment of patients who otherwise were unable to tolerate laser and IPL treatments because of pain. In my practice I have seen a significant increase in patient volume because of this device.”

Sybaritic Introduces the Hydration Station

Sybaritic Introduces the Hydration Station

Revolutionary New Technology for Guilt-Free Tanning

Sybaritic, worldwide leader in aesthetic technologies, has introduced the Hydration Station™, the first system of its kind to offer tanning and self-tanning salons the ability to prepare their clients’ skin for accelerated tanning results, prolong the life of their tan and protect skin from dehydration.

Statistics show that there are over 20,000 tanning salons in the United States and one to two million Americans attend tanning salons more than 100 times per year, especially in the winter months. People are continually striving to have a healthy glow year round. With the launch of the Hydration Station, Sybaritic has created a technology for consumers to take their tans to the next level and transform their skin.

The Hydration Station is ideal for those who have reached their “tanning plateau” with traditional tanning beds. It is also great for sunless tanners as the Hydration Station™ detoxifies and cleanses the skin which allows for even, natural looking color that lasts much longer on the skin after airbrush or spray tanning. Gone are the days of the blotchy, streaky and fake looking color. The Hydration Station has transformed the sunless tanning experience.

The Hydration Station is a self-contained system used prior to tanning and may be used alone for the ultimate nourishment and conditioning of the skin. The Hydration Station incorporates Hydrofusion™, a proprietary combination of radiant heat and steam, LED color technology and a liquid vitamin skin fusion. This powerful combination promotes a deep, dark tan and leaves skin soft, supple and radiantly beautiful while taking the richness of the tan to the next level.

The harmonization of radiant heat and steam boosts oxygenation and circulation allowing for deeper and faster penetration of anything that is put on the skin. This Hydrofusion process essentially turns the skin into a giant sponge. As the radiant heat stimulates the skin, steam becomes a natural cleanser preparing it for greater product penetration and absorption while balancing the pH and replenishing moisture lost from tanning. The result is clean, balanced, hydrated, vibrant skin ideally prepared for melanin activation and/or DHA absorption.

Every Hydration Station session includes a liquid vitamin infusion containing a specific blend of vitamins, minerals and pharmaceutical grade botanical extracts to prepare, prolong and protect the life of your tan and your skin.

Additionally, the Hydration Station exemplifies the highest technology in the industry as it is DVD compatible and contains a vibratory massage bed to create an enjoyable and stress reducing environment for users.

Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment

COSMELAN® DEPIGMENTATION TREATMENT DELIVERS ACCELERATED REMOVAL OF SKIN DISCOLORATION IN ALL SKIN TYPES

The aesthetic medical industry welcomes the popular European treatment for hyperpigmentation to the USA. Cosmelan Depigmentation Treatment by mesoestetic advances the science of pigment correction to its most effective capabilities yet with a fast-acting formula and a novel treatment approach safe for all skin types.

Chemical peels have long been the preferred choice of physicians for treating hyperpigmentation. Unfortunately, this treatment method often requires months of repeat office visits, unsightly peeling and irritation, and is limited to more resilient skin types. The Cosmelanâ method eliminates these challenges with a non-invasive depigmentation action that is compatible with all skin types, from fair Nordic skin to dark African skin and the many variations in between. Its mechanism of action works internally at a cellular level to decrease melanin production in the cells responsible for skin pigmentation. This approach produces accelerated results without the visible peeling and irritation associated with conventional chemical peels.

The two-step treatment course begins with an in-office professional application of the cream-based Cosmelan 1 Mask, followed by a home maintenance program using Cosmelan 2 Cream to ensure the continued inhibition of melanin-based blemishes. Improvement in the reduction of skin discoloration will occur within 30 days of initial treatment.

The Cosmelan Mask’s gentle yet effective ingredient profile includes tyrosinase inhibitors to block tyrosine, the enzyme necessary in melanin formation; lightening agents that divert dark pigment to light; UV radiation barriers to prevent the sun’s rays from triggering the process; antioxidants to protect and promote collagen growth; and active botanicals with hydrating and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin.

The Cosmelanâ Depigmentation Treatment, along with all of the mesoestetic® professional treatments and medical skin care lines, is available through mesoestetic USA. For almost two decades, Barcelona-based mesoesteticâ Pharmaceutical Laboratories has been a global leader in the research, innovation and development of skin care solutions for the medical cosmetic sector. Its scientifically advanced formulations are successfully used by medical professionals in more than 40 countries.
