Baby Boomers Key To Economic Recovery

Baby Boomers Key To Economic Recovery - Expert Reveals Why Boomers Buy, And How To Sell To Them

Baby Boomers should be renamed Economic Boomers

As a statistical demographic, they control more than half of the discretionary spending, they hold more than 70 percent of the country’s wealth and a behavioral trend that indicates that they are still spending that money, even during the recession.

That’s why, according to one expert, they hold the key to America’s economic recovery and why the best thing American business could do right now is market to boomers.

“When the American economy recovers, it will be on the backs of Baby Boomers,” said Steve Howard, author of Boomer Selling, from ACTion Press (www.boomerselling.com). “Consumer spending is the backbone of our economy, and Boomers are still spending – they are simply being more selective than before the recession. When selling to them, you can’t ‘quick close’ them, you can’t corner them into buying something they don’t want and you can’t trick them into buying something they can’t afford. So, the best thing any business in America could do right now is to learn how to sell to Boomers. It’s not just good for business – it’s good for the economy.”

Boomers carry with them not only the hopes of companies that offer consumer products and services, but also the economy itself.

“When it’s crunch time in the ball game, you field your best players,” Howard said. “In a recession, the best spenders are the star athletes, and right now, they are Boomers. They are conspicuous consumers, but they are also smart consumers, and their buying patterns help the cream of American business rise to the top.”

Howard described the characteristics of Boomers, and how they decide to buy:

• They are smart, insecure, caring, direct, confident and suspicious.
• They’ve seen every sales trick in the book and hate most of them.
• They are the vanguard of the consumer culture, so marketers and sales people have been trying to sell to them since they saw their first cereal commercial on a 12 inch black and white TV (before cable).
• Sales tricks and pressure tactics do nothing but insult them
• They not only know the value of a dollar, but they also know the value of a penny. They’ll buy a $1,000 suit at Nordstrom’s, then stop at Wal-Mart for socks.
• They sometimes don’t make sense – they’ll remodel their kitchen with a giant six-burner stainless steel range, and then use it for heating water for tea.
• They’ll bargain and haggle at the drop of a hat, squeezing concessions from salespeople. They’re favorite question is “is that the best you can do?”
• They know they are special, and they believe they should be recognized for being unique

“If they are so difficult, why bother with them?” Howard asked. “The short answer is that because that’s where the money is. They may be savvy and egotistical, but they are also loyal and offer referrals to people who go out of their way to take care of them. They are a lot of work for salespeople, but if you can earn their trust and confidence, they will be the best customers you ever had.”

Mona Spa Owner Decides to Get Back to Basics

Bigger Isn’t Always Better, Entrepreneur Finds - Mona Spa Owner Decides to Get Back to Basics

By James Dowd, Memphis Commercial Appeal

After a couple of decades as a successful entrepreneur, Mona Sappenfield knows a thing or two about surviving in the business world.

For example, “Bigger isn’t always better,” Sappenfield says. “Sometimes, smaller is.”
After years of expansion, Mona Spa owner Mona Sappenfield decided to let go of several locations and focus on her original site in East Memphis. As a result, Sappenfield says her business is better prepared to withstand current economic challenges.

Mark Weber/The Commercial Appeal
After years of expansion, Mona Spa owner Mona Sappenfield decided to let go of several locations and focus on her original site in East Memphis. As a result, Sappenfield says her business is better prepared to withstand current economic challenges.

That sense of pragmatism recently led the founder and president of Mona Spa and Laser Center to retool her business plan to focus on one endeavor instead of overseeing several.

Rather than continuing to operate spas in Germantown and in Jackson, Miss., and licensing franchises in Michigan, Oregon and Washington state, these days Sappenfield is concentrating on her East Memphis site.

“For the last six years I thought expansion was my exit plan and the key to a secure retirement, but the plan changed,” Sappenfield says. “It’s the reality of this economy. The strength and future of my business is in its foundation, and that’s what I’m devoting my full attention to now.”

The decision to downsize and consolidate operations was difficult, but necessary, Sappenfield says. After building up a loyal local client base, she branched out a few years ago, expanding to three regional sites and three franchises.

Initially, business soared, but changes in the industry — including the entry of some doctor’s offices into the laser skin care market — and a souring economy left her in a tough spot.

“I spent a lot of time traveling to the other spas, but it was difficult to maintain the same level of quality that I’d established with my first salon,” Sappenfield says. “It got to the point that I knew I had to make a change, and that meant stepping back from the other endeavors.”

That’s a wise move, but it’s one that many small-business owners wait too late to make, says Mark Taylor, director of the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC), located in the Renaissance Center at 555 Beale.

“Growth is certainly good, but you’ve got to prepare for it and adjust your business model if the environment changes,” Taylor said. “In this economy, we’re seeing more people who want to start or expand businesses and that’s great. We’re just trying to make sure they have the necessary training and support to make it work.”

To help, the TSBCD offers a variety of free programs, including financial and management workshops for entrepreneurs. All of the counselors at the organization are former small- business executives and have experience in what works — and what doesn’t.

“We provide educational opportunities and practical examples,” Taylor says. “Our people are able to give realistic advice on what to expect and what to do because we’ve all operated our own companies. With the way our economy has been struggling lately, we’re seeing a lot more people who are seeking our services.”

Cathy Walton, chairwoman of SCORE Memphis, says interest in her organization’s business workshops continues to grow. The group offers a variety of business-related courses, many of which are free.

“We help small-business owners make the right decisions according to the economic climate,” Walton says. “There’s been a marked increase in attendance for our programs during the last six months, and I don’t see that diminishing any time soon. People are trying to be smarter about running their companies and more focused on getting the maximum return from their efforts.”

For Sappenfield, that means a narrower focus, but it also means a wider range of services.

Renovations are under way at her East Memphis spa and the business is going green by outfitting employees in uniforms made from hemp, using organic cleaning products and offering organic makeup and skin care products.

A number of introductory and discount packages are now being offered, and the message is clear that the skin-care entrepreneur is here to stay.

“You adapt or you die, it’s just that simple,” Sappenfield says. “I’ve worked too hard to just let this dream disappear, so I’m positioning my business to be around for a long, long time. That’s good news for my clients, and it’s good news for me.”

Foundation for Hair Restoration Brings Breakthrough Surgical Technology to the US

Foundation for Hair Restoration Brings Breakthrough Surgical Technology to the US and Announces Nationwide Expansion of its Network of Top Doctors

MIAMI (May 14, 2009) – Miami and NY-based Jeffrey Epstein, M.D., FACS, one of the world’s foremost surgical hair restoration experts, has recently established The Foundation for Hair Restoration and Plastic Surgery, Inc. (FHRPS), a nationwide group of top surgical hair restoration and plastic surgeons. Recognized for expertise and specialization in their respective fields, these doctors will help to position The Foundation for Hair Restoration and Plastic Surgery as the nation’s leading specialized surgical network.

“Although cosmetic procedures are down by almost 50% (industry wide) the FHRPS has grown to expand its business by bringing together a select group of prominent surgeons. With the expansion, we can now create a larger network of renowned hair restoration and plastic surgeons making the selection process much easier for prospective patients,” said Dr. Jeffrey Epstein, M.D., FACS and founder of The Foundation for Hair Restoration and Plastic Surgery.

The FHRPS brings their patients the latest in hair restoration technology with the implementation of a breakthrough procedure called follicular unit extraction (FUE). This technique is an incisionless procedure in which hundreds to thousands of hair grafts are harvested from the sides and back of the head using a small, circular-shaped 0.8mm punch that leaves minimal to no scarring. Each of these grafts is then re-implanted into the balding areas. This procedure decreases recovery time, and is ideal for patients who wish to wear their hair short.

The FHRPS’s Newest Surgeons
Dr. Glenn Charles, Secretary of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery has specialized in the hair restoration field for over 10 years.

New York-based Dr. Yael Halaas is board certified by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and widely sought after for fat transfer, blepharoplasty, endoscopic browlift, cheek lifts, rhinoplasty and hair restoration.

Dr. Shelly A. Friedman has a background in dermatology, is a founder of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and incorporates advanced surgical techniques such as FUE.

Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Max Polo specializes in body contouring and breast surgery with over 20 years of medical training and experience.

New Micro-Needle Skin Therapy with Less Risk of PIH, No Downtime

New Micro-Needle Skin Therapy with Less Risk of PIH, No Downtime

Enhance Ingredient Absorption, Encourage Renewal with BENEV SkinStamp VMT

Mission Viejo, CA—Now medical skin specialists and their patients have a new choice in micro-needle transdermal therapy that creates less potential for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and no downtime while still offering great skin rejuvenation results. BENEV Company Inc., an FDA-licensed pharmaceutical manufacturer, introduces a simple new approach to micro-needle skin procedures, SkinStamp Vertical Micro-Needle Therapy (VMT).

This hand-held Class I medical device causes less pain, less bleeding, and reduced risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation compared to other similar devices. It is an effective delivery system for topical skin solutions, creating temporary micro-channels with micro-fine stainless steel needles (0.8 mm length) for ingredients to travel through to deeper layers. It is excellent for all skin types, including Asian and Latin skin, and can even be used on active acne to promote increased oxygen to clogged pores. The mild controlled wound created with the BENEV SkinStamp VMT encourages skin renewal for a healthier looking, more youthful complexion.

Unlike dermal rollers, which penetrate the skin at wide, varying angles, leading to stretching and pulling as the device rolls across the skin, SkinStamp penetrates straight into the skin without stretching or pulling. This reduces bleeding, downtime, and the risk of adverse reactions, such as post-inflammatory pigmentation, on ethnic and sensitive skin types.

SkinStamp is a great treatment to incorporate into patient strategies as preparation, between-treatment results enhancement, and maintenance procedures. For optimal results, the BENEV SkinStamp VMT should be used with BENEV GF Rejuvenating, GF Brightening, or GF Body Care Complex.

About BENEV Company, Inc.
BENEV is committed to serving medical skin care professionals around the world by developing scientifically advanced, effective solutions that promote optimum skin health.
