DermaSweep’s Skin-Specific Infusions Are Now Paraben Free

DermaSweep’s Skin-Specific Infusions Are Now Paraben Free

DermaSweep has removed parabens and Methylisothiazolinone from its products including Skin Specific Epi-Infusion solutions.

Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone are organic compounds that are effective preservatives in a variety of “WASH OFF” cosmetic products like shampoos, conditioners, eye makeup removers and body wash.

15 different European countries and the United States performed a study regarding Allergic Contact Dermatitis to MI and MCI. MCI was implicated as a contact allergen in 2.9% of cases in Finland, 3.6% in the United States, 5.7% in Germany, and up to 8.4% in Italy. Importantly, shampoos and rinse-off products were less common culprits at causing dermatitis in these groups, when compared to leave-on cosmetics, such as moisturizers in which the concentrations of MI/MCI exceeded 15ppm.

All DermaSweep® Epi-Infusion Skin Specific Solutions are devoid of Methylisothiazolinone, Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Parabens.

DermaSweep Epi Infusion treatments combine the elements of bristles to exfoliate the upper layers of the skin, vacuum and continual flow application of any number of Epi- Infusion formulations to simultaneously exfoliate and deliver topical products deeper into the skin.

Now that DermaSweep Skin Specific Infusions are MI, MCI and Paraben free the procedures are even safer than before, all the while extremely effective in treating a variety of problems from acne to sundamaged skin.

Institut de Management International’s (IMHI) ‘Chill House’ Wins Competition

‘Not Your Grandmother’s Spa’: Spa as Hip Social Clubhouse, Combining Lounging, Drinking, Dancing, and High-Tech Experiences, Wins Global Spa Summit’s ‘Spa of the Future’ Design Contest

Institut de Management International’s (IMHI) ‘Chill House’ Wins Competition For Best Concept Appealing to Gen Y Spa-Goers

New York, NY– June 18, 2009 – With ‘Gen Y’ poised to replace Baby Boomers as the spa industry’s core clientele, the Global Spa Summit, together with leading international hospitality management school Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, recently announced the winner of its groundbreaking Student Spa Strategy Challenge, awarded to the graduate school team presenting the best new spa concept aimed at the 21-to-30-year-old demographic. The Institut de Management International’s (IMHI) ‘Chill House Lounge & Spa,’ with its deeply social vision of spa going, took home the prize for the most ‘feasible and innovative’ spa concept for the Gen Y market.

The contest was introduced for the first time at the 2009 Summit held in Interlaken, Switzerland and was the brainchild of, and coordinated by, Demian Hodari, Professor of Strategic Management at Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne. Student teams first competed against other teams at their respective institutions, and finalists from leading hospitality schools the Institut de Management International (IMHI) of Paris and the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (ELH) of Switzerland were invited to showcase their concepts for the ‘spa of the future’ before a panel of distinguished judges. The judging panel included executives from some of the most prestigious industry establishments, including Susan Harmsworth, Founder and CEO of ESPA International, and Wolf Hengst, Chairman of Wahanda.com and former President of World Wide Hotel Operations for Four Seasons.

As Susie Ellis, member of the Global Spa Summit Board of Directors and president of SpaFinder, Inc. noted, “The student proposals demonstrate that the Gen Y spa wave represents more than just a simple demographic shift: to compete in the future spas will need to re-think everything from design, treatment menus, programs, and pricing models, to technology and wireless connectivity inside the spa, as well as Internet marketing strategies without.” Ellis added that spas would need to re-shape their experiences to meet the demands of this extraordinarily social, tech-obsessed, ethnically diverse, wellness-demanding generation.”

The winning entrant ‘Chill House’ gives new meaning to the concept of social spa-ing, revealing how little interest the next-generation spa consumer has in the hushed, pampering-focused, luxury spa-palaces of old. With its playful hyper-social ‘clubhouse’ experience (centered around a mixed-use ‘chill out’ atrium that goes from spa lounge by day, to after-work bar, to weekend dance club), Chill House re-imagines the spa as the social hub of young adult communities – a place where people go to network, eat, drink, work out, unwind, as well as get a treatment. The communal seating/lounging areas around a series of pools as well as the glass-front saunas show the emphasis is on social observation and interaction - while light, music, video and Internet options reveal a powerful technology focus. New offerings for men and multi-racial-friendly treatments and retail offerings underscore a focus on diversity.

The pricing model encourages membership and making the spa a social ‘hang-out,’ rather than an infrequent indulgence. In a cash-free environment, users swipe their ‘Chill Card’ for lounging hours, treatments, organic snacks or drinks, and for purchases at the on-and off-line retail store – and all transactions can be viewed at a personalized online page. Weekday ‘Happy Hours’ featuring alcoholic smoothies and the ‘Drinks and Detox’ package (where groups visit Chill House and a partner club one night, then return for brunch and a detox treatment the next morning) reveal how far the concept diverges from the puritanical atmosphere at traditional spas. Marketing revolves heavily around the Internet (social networking sites, YouTube, the Chill House Site); deploying brand ambassadors from the fashion, music and design world; partnerships with local dance clubs and businesses; as well as theme parties with trendy music and social personalities.

The runner-up concept from Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (ELH), with its college-campus-integrated spa ‘Spa4U,’ also shows a clear focus on the social ‘spa-clubhouse’ model (recreation areas, communal hot tubs, a café) - as well as embedded high technology (Wi-Fi throughout the spa and a 100% online booking model at the Spa4U portal).

Each member of the winning team from IMHI received a certificate for free registration to a future Summit (a prize worth US $2,290 per student).

Next year, the Global Spa Summit plans to expand the Student Spa Strategy Challenge to include leading international architecture and design institutions, in addition to top hospitality management schools.

Sound Surgical Technologies Places 1,000th VASER® Lipo System Amongst Strong Patient Demand

Sound Surgical Technologies Places 1,000th VASER® Lipo System Amongst Strong Patient Demand

LOUISVILLE, Colo. – Despite the current economic recession, physician and patient demand for the VASER Lipo body contouring procedure continues to accelerate at healthy rates. Sound Surgical Technologies LLC, creator of the VASER Lipo System, placed its 1,000th system during the first quarter of 2009. Further, over 100,000 VASER procedures have been performed worldwide to date. Each month more than 10,000 patients visit the VASER.com website searching for a physician in their area. This is a testament to the successful results VASER Lipo provides.

“The VASER Lipo System is without a doubt the most versatile body contouring technology on the market,” said Carter Morgan, Vice President of Worldwide Sales at Sound Surgical Technologies LLC. “VASER Lipo has become a trusted product in a heavily saturated body contouring market. With the VASER Lipo procedure, patients and physicians know they will get consistently excellent outcomes.”

Sound Surgical Technologies placed its 1,000th system with Dr. Tess Mauricio of Scripps Ranch Dermatology and Cosmetic Center in San Diego, CA.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Mauricio to our list of key VASER Lipo physicians around the world,” Carter Morgan adds.

Dr. Mauricio is a Board Certified Dermatologist specializing in laser treatments, liposculpture and non-invasive skin rejuvenation. She is a graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine and a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of California, San Diego.

“I was waiting for technology that was truly worth incorporating into our current liposuction practice. I was wary of the marketing hype that many of the new energy based liposuction technologies came with,” says Dr. Mauricio. “VASER technology immediately seemed scientifically sound and proved to be the real deal.”

Dr. Mauricio has trained and worked with world renowned leaders in the field of dermatology, and is an internationally acclaimed authority in cosmetic dermatology, body contouring, and laser treatments. She is a published author and to date has trained thousands of physicians worldwide from Beverly Hills to New York, London, and Asia. Dr. Mauricio is also one of the youngest women to ever hold the position of President of the San Diego Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

“I am excited to add VASER Lipo to my practice’s minimally invasive and non-surgical body contouring offerings,” adds Dr. Mauricio. “The VASER Lipo procedure minimizes trauma to vessels and nerves and results in significantly easier post-op recovery for patients. It gives me a broad range of contouring capabilities not found in any other system. I’m impressed with how little bruising, swelling and post-op pain patients experience with VASER compared with the older techniques. It is a safe and effective technology that delivers better results with less downtime. Any practice that offers liposuction will benefit from VASER technology.”

Cutera’s Pearl Fractional Laser Answers Need for More Youthful Eyes

Cutera’s Pearl Fractional Laser Answers Need for More Youthful Eyes

BRISBANE, Calif. /PRNewswire/ — Cutera, Inc. (Nasdaq: CUTR), a leading provider of laser and other light-based aesthetic systems worldwide, is driving category innovation with the Pearl Fractional eye treatment. This advanced laser procedure answers growing consumer demand for an aggressive yet affordable solution to what many doctors believe is the top facial aging concern: eyes.

“Pearl Fractional is a unique and outstanding treatment option for the delicate periorbital area, which often shows the first signs of aging and can be the most challenging to treat,” said Brian Biesman, M.D., medical director of the Nashville Centre for Laser and Facial Surgery, Nashville, TN, and immediate past president of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. “The treatment works so well because it delivers very nice skin tightening plus it addresses skin quality – improving tone, texture and discoloration for an overall more youthful appearance.”

Physicians traditionally treat photo-damaged skin around the eyes with spot laser treatments and dermal fillers. The new approach, pioneered by Dr. Biesman, not only uses Pearl Fractional around the eyes, but directly over the eyelids and under the eyes too.

Dr. Biesman notes that the procedure is especially popular with patients who are approaching a milestone. “A lot of my patients come to me on the 4s and the 9s – 34, 39, 44, 49,” he said. “My patients are very pleased that they see immediate, noticeable improvement in a single treatment, with very little recovery time.”

Pearl Fractional, utilizing a specialized patented 2790 nm wavelength, received FDA clearance in 2008 and offers physicians a new and beneficial approach to resurfacing the skin. As with all aesthetic procedures, patients should consult a physician experienced in aesthetic laser procedures to ensure that their treatment is safe and effective.

Cynosure Enhances Industry-Leading Smartlipo Laser Lipolysis Workstation

Cynosure Enhances Industry-Leading Smartlipo Laser Lipolysis Workstation with Increased Energy and Intelligent Temperature Sensing

Company’s New Smartlipo MPX 46 Watts Enables Physicians to Melt and Remove Larger Areas of Fat 50% Faster, with Superior Patient Safety

WESTFORD, Mass., /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ — Cynosure, Inc. (Nasdaq: CYNO), a leading developer and manufacturer of a broad array of light-based aesthetic treatment systems, today introduced the multi-wavelength Smartlipo MPX 46 watts, the latest and most powerful advance in the company’s acclaimed Smartlipo platform of minimally invasive workstations for LaserBodySculpting.

The 46-watt workstation enables a physician to liquefy and remove larger areas of unwanted fat in about half the time required by the original 32-watt Smartlipo MPX. Like the original Smartlipo MPX, the 46-watt workstation is equipped with ThermaGuide, the latest in Cynosure’s proprietary SmartSense family of intelligent energy delivery systems. ThermaGuide is designed to work in harmony with the laser. It continually monitors the temperature under the skin, and controls the output of energy, helping to ensure that the treatment area remains within a safe and an optimal temperature range for fat removal and tissue tightening through tissue coagulation. Cynosure has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance to market the Smartlipo MPX. The company launched its 46-watt workstation at the recent American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s 42nd Annual Meeting.

“In my experience, no other laser-assisted lipolysis technology approaches the quality, safety or effectiveness of Cynosure’s 46-watt Smartlipo MPX,” said John W. Decorato, M.D., a board certified plastic surgeon in Staten Island, NY. “The nearly 50 percent increase in power allows me to treat larger areas, and multiple areas, with a faster response. Smartlipo MPX also is the only lipolysis technology on the market equipped with temperature sensing and control, a layer of safety that is unmatched in the industry.”

“With the introduction of Smartlipo MPX 46 watts, we believe that we have strengthened the competitive advantage of our laser lipolysis technology not only from the standpoint of efficacy, but also in terms of patient safety,” said Cynosure President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Davin.

Laser-assisted lipolysis with Smartlipo MPX is performed under local anesthesia, allowing a patient to go home the same day as the procedure is performed. “Compared with liposuction, the return to normal activities is much faster following a Smartlipo MPX procedure,” Dr. Decorato said. “With Smartlipo MPX, the laser actually liquefies the fat, allowing it to be easily aspirated, as opposed to the vigorous mechanical suction of fat involved with liposuction, which can cause significant swelling and soft tissue trauma.”

John Milllard, M.D., a board certified plastic surgeon based in Denver, said he was able to aspirate approximately 1200 mL of fat, the equivalent of roughly 5 cups, in 10 minutes with the 46-watt Smartlipo MPX. “I would never be able to obtain this amount this quickly and with such little effort using suction-assisted lipoplasty alone,” he said. “The 46-watt MultiPlex makes it possible to perform procedures faster. Smartlipo MPX has enabled me to add two entirely new patient demographics to my practice: thinner patients and patients with areas of elastosis that typically could not be treated with traditional liposuction methods.”

Smartlipo MPX uses Cynosure’s patented MultiPlex technology to combine the benefits of the 1064-nm and 1320-nm wavelengths in one laser output. MultiPlex technology enables the workstation’s two wavelengths to be fired sequentially, creating a blended thermal and photomechanical effect that efficiently liquefies fat and tightens skin through collagen remodeling. The two wavelengths can also be used individually, and each offers unique characteristics. The 30-watt 1064-nm wavelength disrupts a broad region of tissue while heating the treated areas evenly. The 1064-nm wavelength also mediates blood vessel coagulation enhancing hemostasis. The 16-watt 1320-nm wavelength is highly concentrated with minimal scatter, and is rapidly absorbed by the water in the tissue, which makes it highly effective in the disruption of fat and treatment of skin.

Research presented at the 2009 American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery Annual Conference demonstrates with statistical significance that Smartlipo MPX tightens skin and shrinks skin tissue more efficaciously than skin treated with liposuction alone.

“Clinical research played a key role in the development of this technology,” Davin said. “Prior to increasing the power of the system, we conducted extensive clinical studies to identify an optimal temperature threshold at which laser energy would effectively emulsify fat cells and tighten tissue. We developed an array of intelligent motion and temperature sensing technologies that automatically govern the flow of energy and prevent the system from exceeding temperature thresholds. These are tangible and fundamental innovations that we believe distinguish our laser lipolysis technology and reflect our commitment to the highest degree of patient care.”

Studies Highlight a Revolutionary New Method of Treating Post-Operative Bruising

Studies Highlight a Revolutionary New Method of Treating Post-Operative Bruising

Candela’s Vbeam Laser Gives Millions of Post-Surgical Patients a New Sense of Freedom

WAYLAND, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Candela Corporation (NASDAQ: CLZR) announced today that two studies have reported superior results on patients who benefited from the Candela Vbeam® laser treatments for bruising resulting from cosmetic procedures. The studies concluded that the Vbeam pulsed-dye laser significantly expedited the healing process, improved outcomes, and provided greater overall patient satisfaction.

A study published in the March/April 2009 edition of the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, entitled: “Pulsed-Dye Laser for Treating Ecchymoses After Facial Cosmetic Procedures” by DeFatta, R. J., Krishna, S., and Williams, E. F., III concluded that “the Vbeam laser treatment resulted in a 63% mean improvement in ecchymoses scores within forty-eight (48) to seventy-two (72) hours.”

The second study, a 2009 ASLMS abstract, entitled: “A Simple Solution to a Common Problem” evaluated the effectiveness and safety of the long-pulse PDL (the Vbeam) for the treatment of ecchymoses. In this study by Elizabeth Hale, M.D., Julie Karen, M.D., Chris Hunzeker, M.D., Elliot Weiss, M.D., Leonard Bernstein, M.D., Lori Brightman, M.D., Anne Chapas, M.D., and Roy Geronemus, M.D. results showed that twenty-four hours post-treatment with the Vbeam laser, the average improvement was 62% and 13% for treated and untreated bruises, respectively.

Edwin F. Williams, M.D., Director, The Williams Center Plastic Surgery Specialists, and nationally recognized plastic surgeon pioneered this breakthrough Vbeam treatment. “Anytime you penetrate the skin there is a potential for bruising and we find that it is the bruising which occurs after many of these procedures that prevents patients from getting out into the public. It is extremely difficult to cover these unsightly marks with make-up and bruising can last for a number of weeks,” said Dr. Williams. Dr. Williams continued, “After just one treatment with the Vbeam, our patients experience dramatic clearance of the injured blood vessels. This treatment is a significant differentiator to our practice and we are excited to finally be able to offer our patients a safe and easy treatment of bruising that works!”

Roy G. Geronemus, M.D., Director, Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, commented, “There are millions of surgical and injectable procedures performed every year which often have bruising as a side effect that can last up to two weeks.” Dr. Geronemus continued, “This is a significant new use for the Vbeam which was already our “workhorse” laser because of its efficacy and safety profile for a wide variety of applications including skin rejuvenation, the treatment of rosacea, acne, diffuse redness, scars and more.”
