Skin Brightening Treatments Up 17% from Last Year

Skin Brightening Treatments Up 17% from Last Year - A Porcelain Complexion is the Most Sought after Skin

(Livingston, NJ) Achieving a porcelain-like complexion has long been a priority among Asian women. Within the past few years, it has become an increasingly popular skin concern among women in the U.S. A tan was once considered healthy, yet these days, a light, even complexion is the most sought after look. Skin brightening treatments have gone up 17% since last year and are able to safely provide women of all skin tones with the luminous complexions that they desire.

As we diversify—half of the world and one-third of the U.S. population are people of color—brightening promises to continue to attract more patients. Susan Stevens Tanne, MD, aesthetic physician and Medical Director of Cosmetic Laser MD in Livingston, NJ, treats hyperpigmentation in patients of varying skin tones. “Current skin brightening treatments allow me to treat all ethnic groups, as uneven pigmentation is a top concern for women of color,” Tanne says.

An uneven skin tone, or hyperpigmentation, results from overproduction of melanin in the skin when it is exposed to inflammatory agents such as smoke, pollution, and chemicals. Dark spots on the skin can also arise from age, stress, sun exposure, acne scarring, pregnancy and other hormonal changes.

Tanne treats hyperpigmentation in her patients with a combination of non-invasive cosmetic procedures, such as laser treatments, peels, and at-home skincare. The FotoFacial RF is a non-ablative laser treatment that gently treats hyperpigmentation, tightens pores, and reduces fine lines. With a combination of light and radiofrequency in each pulse, the FotoFacial safely treats fair to medium skin types, including Latin-American, Middle Eastern, East Indian, and Asian skin tones.

For patients with darker skin tones, Dr. Tanne uses the Melanage Skin Lightening Peel. “Melanage is the most effective and safest treatment that I have found to treat hyperpigmentation on all skin types, especially for those patients with darker skin tones who cannot tolerate the FotoFacial,” Tanne explains.

Patients can also turn to other exfoliation methods such as microdermabrasion, SilkPeel, and chemical peels. These treatments work by removing layers of dead skin that can cause a dull appearance.

Still, Tanne advises her patients to remember that the most important component to a glowing complexion is daily maintenance. “I remind my patients that although they visit the dentist twice a year, they still brush their teeth twice a day,” says Tanne. “The same is true for aesthetic skin treatments. I insist that my patients continue to improve their skin with a dedicated program of home skincare.”

A key component of a good home skincare regimen is the daily use of high-quality sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Tanne advises patients to seek out sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are not present in most over-the-counter skincare products. Adding sunscreen to one’s daily routine helps ensure that the glowing results achieved from skin brightening laser treatments will continue to take effect.

Medical science has made it possible for patients to turn back the clock and gain the luminous skin of their youth. With skin brightening treatments for every skin type and a good skincare regimen in place, it’s more possible than ever to achieve and maintain a glowing complexion at any age.
